Innkeeper Interview! Get to Know Robert and Douglas Mahan of Aldrich Guest House

Welcome to a new series in our newsletter all about our innkeepers. First up we'll learn some fun facts about Robert and Douglas Mahan of Aldrich Guest House in Galena, IL.

Q: What's one thing you wish that potential guests knew about bed and breakfasts?
A: We would love to let all potential guests know, especially those who are new to bed and breakfasts, that the stereotypes aren't always true. At Aldrich Guest House, we pride ourselves on being the next generation of B&Bs. We do this (in one way) through a decor
that is livably elegant (without fake flowers, doilies, and crazy wallpaper) that references that past as opposed to replicating it. After all, no one wants to stay in a museum or Aunt Edna's attic! We're most proud of our unique version of service that has been developed over the course of our combined 45 years in the service/hospitality industry. It is intuitive, individualized, professional, yet unobtrusive - we're there when you need us, yet we realize that you came to enjoy yourself, not to entertain us.

Q: What has been your strangest guest request?
A: While the requests from guests as an innkeeper have been much tamer than when we worked in large lodging in Chicago, we still definitely get ones that make us shake our heads. We once had a request for a buckwheat pillow (I worked at one of only 3 Forbes Five Star properties and had never even heard of this).

Q: When you’re not busy hosting guests, what are some of the things you like to do in your free time?
A: Often when we aren't busy with guests, we're even busier than with guests. That's when we're getting repairs and maintenance taken care of as we do 99% of all of the work that's needed and there's a fair share needed for a 4,000-square-foot, 171-year old home. In the time that we get to pull away from working, we love getting outside, skiing (both downhill and cross country), knitting (currently working on a lace shawl for my grandmother and Douglas is making a cardigan for his first niece!), and sometimes it's nice to just stay home and hibernate for a day and not get out of our pajamas.

Q: Do you have an inspiring song that you frequently listen to?
A: One that's great for listening to while cooking breakfast is "Groovejet" by Sophie Ellis-Bextor. No matter how much we might be dragging, that always gets us going, and dancing while cooking is way more fun than just dancing or just cooking!

Q: What would you say is the most difficult part about owning a B&B?
A: We don't have any hired help and as I mentioned, we do all of the repairs, maintenance, etc. on our own and all of that is part of the fun. If we had to point to a certain thing that can make life difficult, it would be making sure to have a balance. When you work with your spouse and your home is also your workplace, there are a lot of great perks but it's also important to make sure that you're not JUST working and that you're not just interacting with your spouse as a co-worker. We make it a point to stop 'working' after we serve wine and hors d'oeuvres to our guests in the evening and to take time for ourselves and enjoy dinner together.

Robert and Douglas have been in the service and hospitality industry for a combined nearly 45 years and have owned their inn since October of 2014.
