Preventing Older Adult Falls

The Centers for Disease Control says that people aged 65+ have a greater than 25 percent chance of falling. And if someone falls once, the chance of falling again doubles, meaning there’s a more than 50 percent chance for a second fall.

This is serious because falls are a leading cause of lost independence and ability. Seniors often aren’t able to recover fully from the trauma, their overall health declines, and their care needs increase significantly.

However, that doesn’t mean that falls are a normal part of aging. The truth is, most falls are preventable —and you have the power to reduce the risk for yourself or a loved one. Exercise, managing medications, having one’s vision checked, and making the home living environment safer are all steps you can take to prevent a fall.

6 Age-Related Changes that Increase Senior Fall Risk

  1. Decreased strength - Muscle loss starts very early, around age 30. In older adults, less muscle means less strength and weaker bones.

  2. Weaker sense of balance - Many body systems work together to keep us standing upright. Age-related changes and medication side effects can make it more difficult for seniors to stay balanced. Ask a doctor or pharmacist if poor balance may be a side effect of any medications you or a loved one take.

  3. Declining eyesight - Vision helps us keep our balance and avoid obstacles. As vision worsens, so does the ability to stay upright and clearly see what’s in our path.

  4. Loss of flexibility - Age and health conditions make seniors less flexible, especially in hips and ankles. This stiffness increases the likelihood of falling.

  5. Decreased endurance - Not being able to endure physical activity like standing or walking for a reasonable amount of time increases fall risk.

  6. Declining ability and desire to walk - Continuing to walk will improve strength, balance, flexibility, and endurance for older adults. However, many seniors become less active and fall into a negative cycle where less activity leads to less strength and balance.

EveryStep Home Care Expands

Demand is growing in southern Iowa for quality in-home care services that help people recover from illness, injury and surgery or enable them to continue to live at home with chronic health care conditions.

EveryStep is meeting that need, introducing its non-profit home health care services to Iowans in Appanoose, Lucas, Monroe and Wayne counties.

The home care program is now available throughout 20 central, south-central and southern Iowa counties. EveryStep Home Care offers rehabilitation services; infusion/IV therapy; wound and ostomy care; physical, occupational and speech therapies; medication management; disease management; patient care coordination; and post-surgical care. The program is certified by both Medicare and CHAP (Community Health Accreditation Partner).

“When families are facing a health crisis or are struggling to know where to turn, they don’t always know who to contact,” says Brian Hargrave, EveryStep team director in Centerville. “EveryStep can now answer that need – whether a loved one is recovering from illness or injury, facing the end of life, or living with grief and loss.”

“One of the biggest reasons I like working for EveryStep is that I love what I do. Taking care of people comes natural to me. I feel like it gives me a sense of purpose.  Being able to go into someone's house and meet their needs on their level is so fulfilling. With some we may be the only people they see all week and I want it to be pleasant.” – Kim Key, Home Care Home Health Aide
"I enjoy the support that my administrator gives. I also love working with patients in their homes where they recover the best in the comfort of their homes. Patients are more receptive to your education and assistance, they are able to be the most independent as possible in this environment." – Lisa Schutz, Home Care Registered Nurse
"I love the environment of EveryStep. My coworkers are the best people and we are always there to help each other when it’s needed. The support and love our team has for each other including our supervisor, Shona, and scheduler/coordinator, Tami, is the best I’ve ever seen at any work place out there. We truly are the best!" – Bethany Beeson, Home Care Home Health Aide
