Yemeni refugee couple reconnects in U.S., builds a more stable life through TCH services

Wadhah (middle) on his last day at TCH, surrounded by staff members from three different departments who all helped him and his wife, Najla, on their journey.

In 2013, Wadhah and Najla Al-Shargabi narrowly escaped death when militants bombed their house and family printing business in southern Yemen. Homeless, jobless, and with two young sons, they relied on family members to survive amidst a backdrop of violent civil war.

“You can’t imagine how bad it was,” 32-year-old Wadhah says.

Najla, then pregnant, decided to make the 8,200-mile journey to the United States to give birth to her third child in safety. Najla is a naturalized U.S. citizen, but her husband and sons were not. Agonizingly, she knew she had to leave them behind.

Newest portrait time lapse features Somchith, Cambodian refugee and 27-year TCH veteran

It is an honor to share the latest installment of Jonathan Hanks' portrait project featuring TCH's own Somchith Huong.

Somchith's family was displaced by the Khmer Rouge's violent takeover of Cambodia in the 1970s. Her family fled to Thailand, then moved from camp to camp for six long years before being accepted into the United States in 1980.

Somchith's mother, aunt, uncle, and sister all used TCH services to study English and re-connect with loved ones who had been separated.

Last month, Somchith celebrated 27 years with TCH. She is a Legal Advocate who assists some of our community's most vulnerable—victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other crimes.

Listen as Somchith tells her story in her own words.
