Tacoma Celebrates Welcoming Week With Nearly A Dozen Events
TCH Executive Director Liz Dunbar accepts Mayor Strickland's Welcoming Week Proclamation on September 19.
Welcoming Week is a two-week period in September when communities across the United States work to build cross-cultural relationships and strengthen their commitments to welcoming immigrants and refugees.

This year, Tacoma celebrated its status as a Welcoming City with nearly a dozen events that celebrated immigrant and refugee voices, art, and culture.

Tacoma Community House hosted two of these events, both on September 21:

FLAVOR: Stand Up for Immigrants, Sit Down for a Meal — we are still waiting on final counts, but hope to have raised over $10,000 through our restaurant partners and individual gifts! See FLAVOR photos!

Immigrant Detention: Histories, Hopes, and Current Realities — a special forum we hosted in partnership with the Washington State History Museum looking at the city's "welcoming" status given the Northwest Detention Center's presence in the Tide Flats.
Supporting DACA Recipients

On September 5, the Trump Administration made the heartbreaking and disastrous decision to terminate the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, effective March 5, 2018.

Since the inception of DACA in 2012, TCH has helped more than 300 young people gain DACA status so they can continue their education, help support their families and pursue their dreams.

  • In response to the creation of the DACA program, we hired an immigration specialist to handle these cases exclusively
  • On September 20, we partnered with Northwest Immigrant Rights Project (NWIRP) to host a free community forum on "Options After DACA"
  • On September 22, our Immigration Department altered their case loads to see DACA clients for renewals
We will continue to stand with DACA recipients and advocate for a DREAM Act that keeps families together.
