TCH Breaks Ground on New Building, Coming Fall 2019

We are excited to announce that on October 12th Tacoma Community House broke ground on a brand new, two-story, 27,000 sq. ft. building, set to open in Fall 2019!

The building is the result of the Embracing the American Promise: Uniting Communities Campaign, a $13.6 million capital initiative that TCH has been quietly working on for the past few years. Through the generosity of community members just like you, we have raised $12,175,784 – a full 89% of our goal!

The new building will go on our existing block, opposite where TCH stands now. Our current buildings will remain up during construction so that we do not interrupt services, but will be torn down after. The new building will feature:

  • Flexible classrooms and computer labs
  • Spaces for students to study and relax between classes
  • Private offices for confidential meetings with clients
  • A large multipurpose room (open for community use!)

TCH Executive Director Liz Dunbar Announces Retirement

Liz Dunbar is announcing her upcoming retirement from Tacoma Community House effective December 31, 2018, in order to spend time with family and enjoy a second retirement.

“I feel it is the right time for me to move on,” Dunbar says. “TCH is a wonderful organization that is in a very good place — a new building coming, valuable programs and services, a solid financial foundation, and most of all, talented and caring staff! It is time for a new leader to come in and take TCH to even greater heights, with their own vision, talents, and energy.”

Client Spotlight: Huong

Huong (middle, purple dress) and her family.

Huong has always been driven. In Vietnam, she and her husband owned two businesses and were heavily involved in their church. When they immigrated to the U.S. in 2009, the culture shift made things more difficult, but that didn't stop Huong from picking up where she left off.

She immediately began taking English classes at TCH, starting at level 1. She became a licensed aesthetician, manicurist, and food service worker all while studying another language.

After being injured in an accident (and unable to work the types of physically demanding jobs she had before), she funneled her determination into a different direction. She continued taking English classes, advanced to the highest level (5/6), and then enrolled in our Childhood Early Education Resource (CHEER) program to learn about childhood development and become a certified childcare worker.

Thank you for letting us be part of your journey, Huong!

TCH Welcomes New Financial Counselor, Diana Parra

TCH is a United Way Center for Strong Families, which means we are part of a larger network of innovative institutions that have employment coaches and financial counselors to help ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) adults in Pierce County achieve their financial goals.

In support of this mission, TCH has added a new Financial Counselor, Diana Parra, to our team. Parra, whom we share with our longtime community partner Sound Outreach, comes to us with valuable knowledge and experience working with adults in vulnerable situations. She is bilingual in English and Spanish, previously served on TCH's Advocacy team assisting victims of crime, and is the current Vice-Chair of Tacoma's Commission on Immigrant and Refugee Affairs.

For now, Parra will work exclusively with existing clients in TCH's childcare and nursing assistant employment programs. Over time, she hopes to expand services to all TCH Employment clients, and then to our other programs – Education, Immigration, and Advocacy – as well.

Recap: Welcoming Week, Flavor

In September, TCH partnered with over 20 local organizations to host events in honor of National Welcoming Week and immigrants' contributions to Tacoma! There was a citywide proclamation, cultural festivals, family nights, a dance party and Mexican wrestling, a garden tour, a free movie screening, an Immigration 101 workshop, and much more. We thank everyone who made Tacoma's Welcoming Week possible! See full list of events and partners >>

As part of Welcoming Week, we held our annual Flavor Dine-Out Fundraiser on September 20th, partnering with a dozen immigrant-owned and immigrant-friendly restaurants in and around Tacoma! We raised over $11,000 to support our Education, Employment, Immigration, and Advocacy programs – we are so grateful! See restaurants and sponsors >>
