Bank of America supports Client Advocacy program with $75,000 gift

TACOMA—Bright and early on the morning of October 18th, 2016, Tacoma Community House received some pretty amazing news.

At Bank of America’s Basic Needs Grantee Breakfast, Liz Dunbar accepted a check in the amount of $75,000 for our Client Advocacy program! TCH was selected because of the impact of the agency’s work toward improving community development and revitalization in Hilltop and the greater South Sound.

Since our grant proposal requested $25,000—we were surprised (and thrilled) three-fold!

TCH is one of 11 organizations chosen to receive the prestigious Basic Needs award. Bank of America welcomed the small group of grantees selected as a “cohort” (pictured above) with the goal of working together to address the pressing issues in our shared communities.

Bank of America made the decision to fund fewer, larger grants moving forward, in order to partner more closely with awardees. As Kim Vu, Senior Vice President and Seattle Market Manager said, “Bank of America wants to show up.”

The Client Advocacy program at TCH works to find remedies for victims of crime primarily related to domestic violence and sexual assault. Other cases include robbery, human trafficking, homicide, fraud, kidnapping and hate crimes.

Today, the Client Advocacy program has 260 open cases. Most clients served by the program are highly vulnerable undocumented women, living in poverty, with children, afraid and very alone.

On behalf of those we serve, Tacoma Community House is honored by Bank of America’s generous support. By returning a victim and their family to safety, they can begin seeking economic well-being, improvement in their personal health and pursue educational opportunities—all leading to self-sufficiency and quality of life.

Thank you, Bank of America!

Wrapping up the holidays

#GivingTuesday: On November 29th, TCH joined thousands of organizations in a global movement of charity and compassion called #GivingTuesday. We invited our friends and partners to create "starter kits" to help local refugee families—who often come to this country with little more than the clothes on their backs—to build warm, comfortable homes for the holidays.

A huge 'thank you' to Gail W. and the Simpson Family, who generously donated three kitchen kits (the kit in highest demand)! #GivingTuesday also inspired folks to pitch in support for our four core programs. We received an astounding $1,890 that day!
Students Celebrate Quarter's End: On December 15th, TCH's Education Department threw a party to honor their ELA and BEdA students' hard work over the quarter. Teachers and students prepared mouth-watering dishes that filled several tables—many choosing to honor their native countries and cultural traditions in the process. Once everybody ate, students played games, opened gifts, and even got their pictures taken with Santa!

Year End Campaigns Draw Generous Support

We thank everyone who generously contributed to our year end campaigns! We themed our general letter around a simple challenge: "Imagine if what connects us was seen as more powerful than our differences." Many took this to heart and made a gift to our programs, imagining their city as a place that stands up for those who need help achieving what we all want in life: a good job, education, security, and a place to call home.

Meanwhile, our Read2Me year end letter—the brainchild of our wonderful Grants Manager, Julie—was a fun children's story book! Complete with a fanciful cover illustration and fairy tale flow, the story tells of kindly volunteers who make a difference in children's lives simply by reading with them
