Our Ref: EM/2016/34

Dear IPBES Member States and Observers

We would like to inform you of the fact that the authors of the IPBES assessment on pollinators, pollination and food production, have found two factual errors in its Summary for Policymakers (SPM), and that, following guidance from the MEP and Bureau of IPBES, these errors have been corrected as described below.

Description of errors:

Both errors relate to a similar sentence in key message 19, and in section C of the background information (Drivers of change, risks and opportunities and policy and management options):

Sentence in Key message 19: “The FAO International Code of Conduct on the Distribution and Use of Pesticides provides a set of voluntary actions for Government and industry to reduce risks for human health and environment, although only 15 per cent of countries are using it”.

Sentence in Section C: “The FAO International Code of Conduct on the Distribution and Use of Pesticides sets out voluntary actions for Government and industry, although, a survey from 2004 and 2005 suggests that only 15 per cent of countries are using it”.

Error 1: The title of the Code of Conduct was changed in 2014. The SPM incorrectly makes reference to the old title (pre-2014) rather than to its revised one, which is: “International Code of Conduct on Pesticide Management of the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization of the United Nations”.

Error 2: The figure of 15 percent in this sentence is erroneous. A survey from 2004 and 2005 suggests that 61 per cent of countries who completed the survey questionnaire (31 out of 51 countries) are using it and not 15 per cent.

Corrections made:

The secretariat has:

1) corrected these two errors in both places in the text of the final printed version of the SPM, which will be posted on line on the IPBES web site, and sent to all Governments; and

2) inserted a footnote both on the page containing key message 19 (as footnote 6), and on the page containing the corresponding sentence of section C (as footnote 20), as follows:

Corrected sentence in key message 19:

The International Code of Conduct on Pesticide Management of the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization of the United Nations provides a set of voluntary actions for Government and industry to reduce risks for human health and environment.

Corrected sentence in section C:

The International Code of Conduct on Pesticide Management of the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization of the United Nations sets out voluntary actions for Government and industry; a survey from 2004 and 2005 suggests that sixty-one per cent of countries who completed the survey questionnaire (31 out of 51 countries) are using it.

footnote 6 (to sentence in key message 19):

Erratum: a) The title “International Code of Conduct on the Distribution and Use of Pesticides of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)” has been changed to the “International Code of Conduct on Pesticide Management of the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization of the United Nations” to reflect this revision made in 2014; b) A survey from 2004 and 2005 suggests that a total of 31 out of 51 countries who completed the survey questionnaire, or 61 per cent, were using it, and not 15 per cent. The incorrect figure of 15 percent has therefore been deleted from the text.

footnote 20 (to sentence in section C):

Erratum: a) The title “International Code of Conduct on the Distribution and Use of Pesticides of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)” has been changed to the “International Code of Conduct on Pesticide Management of the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization of the United Nations” to reflect this revision made in 2014; b) A survey from 2004 and 2005 suggests that a total of 31 out of 51 countries who completed the survey questionnaire, or 61 per cent, were using it, and not 15 per cent. This correction has been made in the text.

The final SPM will be posted on line in the next couple of weeks, and printed.

Yours sincerely,

Anne Larigauderie | Executive Secretary
