Ref: LE/2015-15

Dear Governments and Stakeholders,

The second year of implementation of the IPBES work programme 2014-2018 is well under way and proceeding according to the guidance received from the Plenary. IPBES currently counts close to 1,000 selected experts active in its various deliverables, and has launched, among other activities, five new assessments (4 regional assessments and the assessment on land degradation and restoration) over the past few months.

These achievements would not have been possible without your generous financial and in-kind contributions.

Total resources received and pledges made to date amount to a total of $27.2 M. Let me thank you for this support, which has allowed IPBES to launch this impressive set of activities.

I would however like to draw your attention to the resource requirements needed to implement the approved work programme, as set out in document IPBES/3/18, totaling $40.8 M. An amount of $13.6 M still needs to be raised in order to implement the approved work programme.

I would therefore like to invite pledges for contributions to the IPBES Trust Fund from Governments, as well as from United Nations bodies, the Global Environment Facility, other intergovernmental organizations and other stakeholders such as the private sector and foundations as per decision IPBES-1/5. I wish to draw your attention to the importance of receiving these pledges ahead of the fourth Plenary in order for the Plenary to be in a better position to discuss the budget for 2016-2017.

I would also like to invite any Government in a position to do so, to consider hosting the fifth session of the Plenary, scheduled for the first quarter of 2017.

If you are in a position to pledge financial support or to offer to host the fifth session of the Plenary, please communicate this to the IPBES Secretariat by email (secretariat@ipbes.net) as soon as possible.

I thank you in advance for your continued support to IPBES.

Yours Sincerely,

Professor Zakri Abdul Hamid
