Letter from the President

It's warming up in Pendleton and so is the tourism season. We generate a fair amount of business traffic as locals which shouldn't be downplayed  - but I feel the cream for tourism business will be good this year.

There was a time not that long ago where I thought another restaurant opening, especially downtown, could mean taking business from others because we couldn't support it here. I think now I'm changing my thought process a little more in line with a critical mass theory. We've had several new restaurants in downtown just recently and a couple other open just off a few blocks. The success they have had has exceeded my best expectations and resulted in us locals having more places to spend time with friends and to be proud when we host an out of town guest. I'm still shocked by the fact I can walk into an establishment here and sometimes have to wait for a table - in Pendleton. That minor and only occasional inconvenience is trumped by my happiness for those establishments that they are doing well. I also appreciate the variety that has come in recent months and I am never tempted to make dinner plans out of town, because I feel we are well taken care of right here in Pendleton.

Hats off to all of you making Pendleton a place to wine and dine.

Thank you,
Jordan McDonald
President, 2018

The Chamber has had a whirlwind beginning to 2018.  A website refresh, new telephones, and staff changes are among the bigger changes we have seen as staff.  The website creates nicer landing pages for those looking for information, while the telephones were a needed update that hopefully improves the customer experience too.

We are still accepting applications for our Membership Coordinator position; the position is open until filled.  Visit our website here for more information.

Thank you to all of you that attended Chamber events in April.  Morning Buzz, Kick It Up After 5, committee meetings, and special events like the Candidate Forum, don’t happen without people showing up.  We hope to see you at Dan Ceniga’s State Farm office for Morning Buzz May 2 and at Oregon Grain Growers Distillery May 16 for our quarterly luncheon.

Finally, if you are interested in hosting a Kick It Up After 5, let us know.  The Chamber staff and Ambassadors are ready and willing to help make it a fun, successful evening.

I Love Pendleton Swag

The Chamber has plenty of T-Shirts, Ball Caps, Beanies, and window clings in stock!  Show the world your love for Pendleton!

Committee Chair Notes

Joseph Hull
Tourism & Marketing Committee

Here at the end of April 2018 with mid 70-degree temps, it feels like Spring was very brief and Summer came busting in, which means tourism season is officially here. We are the destination for many travelers, but some will be driving through and make a quick stop. We must do a great job telling them about the experiences that are available to them in Pendleton so thank you for the folks who will see visitors first. If you have been following us you know that the Tourism & Marketing Committee has been working with Chamber businesses by giving out a passport to dozens of local attractions. This was an effort to encourage our local frontline staff to “spread the word” about all the great things there are to do in Pendleton. On April 16th at the Pendleton Convention Center, we held the celebration party for all who invested in the Frontline effort and it was a successful evening. Prodigal Son Brewery & Pub, Roosters Restaurant, and Hamley Steakhouse all brought food and Tim Guenther, the owner of Prodigal Son, also provided one of his own microbrews, which was excellent. We had 4 participants that visited the most businesses with their passports and had 24 or more signatures. The winner (Representing Team Pendleton Underground Tours) was Judith Burger with 29 signatures! The prizes for the winners were donated by: Pendleton Hat Company, Wildhorse Resort & Casino, Pendleton Underground Tours, and Travel Pendleton. Great job all who participated and a very special thanks to Kristen Dollarhide, Velda Arnaud, Gail Nelson and Brooke Armstrong for such dedicated effort to create the event.

Let’s make 2018 the best year yet in the best town in America!

Capital Improvements Committee

Wanted!  A few good volunteers to serve on our Capital Improvements Committee.  This committee will look at improvements- updates, upgrades, and changes- needed for the Chamber office.  Our hope is to compile a list of projects, estimate the costs, develop funding ideas, and a timeline for the improvements to be made.  This will be a limited duration committee, and we will try and find a meeting schedule that works for our committee volunteers.  A couple Chamber employees will also serve on the committee to give insight into our daily operational needs.
If you are interested in serving on this committee, please contact Megan.
