Letter from the President

Hello from Japan,
I am currently finishing up my travels to Japan with six high school students as the Pendleton Cultural Foundation Chaperone. For those of you not familiar with the program it is a cultural exchange with our Sister City Minamisoma, Japan that has been conducted every year since 1996 - with the exception of a few years following the Tsunami disaster when we couldn't send students. The exchange began with Haramachi city, which was later merged with 2 other cities to become Minamisoma, which is in Fukushima Prefecture.
We are having amazing experiences and making amazing friends, yesterday we received a tour of a Robot Test Field that Minamisoma just broke ground and should be completed in 2020.  The facility is going to serve a similar purpose to Pendleton's UAS Range. I made a few contacts and am hoping that some collaborations can be made between Pendleton and Minamisoma in that industry. I was also able to meet up with former BMCC alumni and friend Takeshi Niitsuma who now runs his family's farm in Haramachi Japan. Also, the Soma Nomaoi Samurai Horse festival is starting this week and we will be attending just before heading back to the United States. I was also invited to a Haramachi Club Rotary meeting and received the clubs banner to return to the Pendleton club.
Tourism is a large part of the economy here, much like Pendleton and I see hope to bring back some fresh ideas about new ways to market ourselves in Pendleton. A renewal of the area is underway as they continue to repair the scars left by a 100ft Tsunami wave that caused damage up and down the coast for over a mile inland many years ago. Tourism has significantly played into their plans for restoration and things are truly moving in a good direction here.
Bye for now, I'll be home soon.

Board President, 2018

Membership Corner

August already! School is starting, Round-Up is coming, our new Executive Director arrives, Leadership class is graduating and we’re still tired from July!  There are so many things happening not only in our community, but here at the Chamber. Our August luncheon will be held Wednesday, August 15th from 11:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Blue Mountain Community College student union/cafeteria in Pioneer Hall.  We have an awesome panel of school representatives along with Pendleton Police Department ready to talk to us regarding school safety and how we measure up in response to the overwhelming rise in violent acts nationwide within our schools. It promises to be extremely informative and you’ll get some great food provided by Simply Catering.

However, before you join us for lunch, we invite each and every one of you to our very own Kick it Up After 5 here at the Chamber. This event will be August 9th from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. on the chamber patio. We’ll have lots of great food, wine, beer, door prizes and a 50/50 drawing. PLUS you’ll get to meet our brand new Executive Director, Janet Duffy Murphy. Please come by, say hello and enjoy some downtime with your colleagues and community members before we all disappear into the fog of Round-Up preparation!

With the AWESOME K5 we are planning we want to ensure we reach as many folks as possible, with that said if there is a business you feel would really like to be at this event, or just someone you’ve been steering towards the chamber, please let me know!  I have some invitations made up and ready to deliver to these folks. I am getting out in the community as much as possible delivering brochures, maps, charms you name it!  I would love an excuse to drop in on as many businesses as possible! This is a GREAT opportunity to let our community know what the Chamber is up too!

From the Director's Desk

The Smithsonian magazine 6/5/2018: “Pendleton – among the 20 best small towns to visit in 2018.”
The Willamette Weekly 7/12/2018: “There’s more to do here than in most cities quadruple its size and you’d be hard pressed to find a better budget weekend trip within a three-hour drive of Portland”.
MSN lifestyle 5/15/2018:  Pendleton: “The most underrated town in Oregon”

As you have read in recent press releases, the board has selected Janet Duffy Murphy as the new Executive Director. We are super excited and are anxiously awaiting her arrival to Pendleton from Billings, Montana. Janet arrives the first week in August and will be taking the helm as Executive Director on August 8.  You are invited to meet Janet for yourself by joining us on August 9th from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. for a special Kick It Up After 5 Business After Hours Event on the patio of the Chamber office. Another not-to-miss event will occur on August 15th when we hold our Summer Luncheon at Blue Mountain Community College featuring school safety.  Check out our Cheri’s Membership Coordinator article in this newsletter for more details.
As we all catch a breather from the 4th of July parade, Pendleton Whisky Music Fest, and Pendleton Bike Week, and with the Pendleton Round-Up just around the corner, it’s helpful to reflect upon the tremendous boost to the local economy these events bring to Pendleton. Kudo’s to the VFW Post 922 for an exceptional parade on the 4th.  I thought it was the best EVER. To the organizers, sponsors, and participants of the Pendleton Whisky Music Feast and Pendleton Bike Week, we can only say WOW and THANK YOU for the vision, guts, and determination to bring these more recent events to life in Pendleton.   One example of a metric showing the impact of these events can have is seen from Travel Pendleton's Pendleton Whisky Music Fest Facebook Giveaway. We were able to reach over 156,800 people.  Our dance card is filling up, and folks are coming to town to experience Pendleton’s warm hospitality and great diversity of well-organized events.
With the good fortune of having an exceptional candidate like Janet stepping in as the new Executive Director, this will be my last missive as interim Executive Director in this newsletter.  I will stay on after the 8th for whatever period of time is necessary to make the transition as smooth and efficient as possible. I am grateful for our wonderful board who had the confidence to hand the keys over to me last May, and to the staff who answered my endless questions, held my hand and guided me when I frequently had that deer in the headlights look, and who are committed to aggressively market, and support the Chambers’ 433 members and over 10,000 personal, phone, and email inquiries and over 60,000 website visitors who visited our office in 2017.
It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve the members of Pendleton Chamber of Commerce and the many visitors to our community for this brief period of time.
I look forward to continuing to see many of you doing good things around town.

Chuck Wood
Interim Executive Director
