Next Open Meeting on Monday 6th January 2020 at 2pm in the Church Rooms

Richard Thomasson, Operations Manager at Cornwall Airport Newquay, will be our first speaker of 2020. The talk is entitled “Connecting Cornwall to the World”. Richard will cover the airport's history, what is happening today, future aspirations and business opportunities.

Following the talk we will have our usual short business meeting before tea and coffee. This will include a short Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) to agree the proposed subscription rates for next year. Announcements from the floor, and questions to the committee, are very welcome.

It is a requirement of our constitution that members of Lostwithiel U3A agree to the proposed subscription rates for the following membership year.

Your committee recommend the subscription rates for the year 1st March 2020 to 28th February 2021 remain unchanged from the 2019/20 fees.

Hence the proposed subscription rates will be as follows:-

  • JOINT MEMBERSHIP (2 people at the same address) - £25.00
  • SINGLE MEMBERSHIP (full member of another U3A branch)  - £11.50
  • JOINT MEMBERSHIP (2 people at the same address, full members of another U3A branch) -  £18.00

Members present at the meeting will be asked to vote on the committee's proposal.

Please DO NOT pay your 2020/21 membership fees at this stage, but wait until you receive a membership reminder in February.

Here are some snippets of news from some  of our groups. Don't forget there are lot more details about all our groups on our shiny new website.

Art Appreciation

Friday January 24th 2020 - Our group will get together for lunch, details yet to be arranged.
Wednesday February 19th 2020 - To the Kurt Jackson Foundation Gallery at St Just for his latest exhibition, Frenchman's Creek, hopefully lunch in our favourite cafe, then perhaps something of interest on our way home if we can.

The next Art Appreciation  planning meeting will be on Monday March 9th 2020 at 2.30pm at The Royal Oak.

Bird Watching

We now have a hardy group of keen amateur birdwatchers who hold regular field trips, weather permitting, to reserves and other bird-watching sites in the region. They are always keen for new members so why not join them on the afternoon of January 8th to see the Murmurations or February 5th to Cargreen.

Congratulations to those who recently completed The 3 Saints Ride (St Mabyn, St Tudy, St Breward) a distance of 21 miles. We reckon they deserve extra Christmas lunch!

Family History

This group has been full for a little while but they now have a couple of spaces so do get in touch with Brenda if you are interested.
French Group
Do you love visiting France?
Do you wish you could chat to the locals?
If you would like to revive your schoolroom French, we'd we!come you to our fun French group.
For details see our webpage.

Garden Visits
The group has developed a fascinating programme for 2020 starting in March at Trewithen Gardens. Prior to that they are having a further planning meeting and belated Christmas lunch on February 21st. Contact Annie Singer if you are interested.

Many people prefer to use a tablet or iPad these days to access the internet. This group meet to share their experience and help each other improve their understanding of tablets or iPads. They would welcome any new members – maybe Father Christmas will bring you a new toy for Christmas which you need help with!!

Photography Group

The recent exhibition at Shire Hall was a great success and good experience for 19 members of the group to exhibit their work. We were delighted to recruit two new members as a result of the exhibition. The first meeting of 2020 will be in The Platform meeting Room on Thursday 16th January at 2pm.

Other groups

As ever there is a host of other activities you can get involved in. If 2020 is the year you decide to get a bit more active try Walking or Strolling. Or if you would rather exercise your minds then you can try Scrabble, Science or Poetry. For the musicians among you we do of course have two Ukulele groups.

New Interest Groups

We do have a couple of groups which are full and operate a waiting list. Many U3A’s around the country have multiple groups for various topics so there is nothing to stop anybody setting up a second Wine Appreciation Group for example.

Or alternatively if you have an idea for a new Interest Group we can help you get things off the ground so get in touch with any of the committee and we can help you out.
