|HOW NEW STATE LEGISLATION MAY IMPACT MONTGOMERY COUNTY’S “RAIN TAX”
This year, the Maryland General Assembly pursued several initiatives to curb or modify the “rain tax", a state mandate compelling Montgomery County to collect a stormwater remediation fee from nearly all of its property owners. Ultimately, the state legislature passed and Governor Hogan approved a new law (Senate Bill 863, now Chapter 124) that seeks to allow for, but no longer compel, the rain tax.

|GLENN ANDERSON SPEAKS AT FRANCHISE OWNER’S ANNUAL MEETING ON BUSINESS SUCCESSION PLANNING
Miller, Miller & Canby Business & Tax Attorney, Glenn Anderson, was invited to speak on the topic of business succession planning, specifically the benefits of an effective exit strategy for a National Franchise Annual Owner’s Meeting in May. Mr. Anderson discussed the options available for transferring a business, including Sale of a Whole Business, Business Combinations, Sale of Owner’s Interest to Another, Transfers to Family Members, and Liquidation. Mr. Anderson’s presentation broke down the various options and issues involved in exiting a business and the planning methods available to small business owners for the exit strategy.
Glenn Anderson leads the Business & Tax and Estates & Trusts practice groups at Miller, Miller & Canby. As both a CPA and a practicing attorney, he has developed a recognized expertise in taxation law.

|JODY KLINE PARTICIPATES ON PANEL FOR URBAN STUDIES & PLANNING PROGRAM AT UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND
On Tuesday, May 12, Jody Kline, head of the Land Use and Zoning Department, had an opportunity to put his experience and knowledge about the Clarksburg planning area to work in the classroom. Mr. Kline was invited to participate as a juror on a three-member panel critiquing the work of student teams in a planning course in the Urban Studies and Planning Program at University of Maryland's School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation in College Park, Maryland.
