Encouraging a Love for Engineering
by
Sara Whitbeck-Zacharias

Maybe you have been lucky enough to experience the animatronics at Disney or feel the rush as animatronic dinosaurs pop out at you as you experience the thrill of Jurassic Park firsthand at Universal Studios. Or perhaps you have had the chance to gaze in awe at the majesty of the fountains at the Bellagio. Maybe you have been able to watch a demonstration of the SARCOS snake robot at a local FIRST event.

Have you ever wondered what skills are required to give life to these inanimate objects? If you are interested in hearing the stories of what it took to build these works of art look no further than Utah FRC Volunteer of the Year, Wayco Scroggin. Wayco played a key role in each of these massive projects and we are thrilled to have him serve as the chairman of the Board of Directors for FIRST Utah and as one of the Judge Advisors for FRC.

We all owe him our thanks for the work he does on our behalf. According to our regional director, Chelsey Short, “Wayco is part of the “Backbone” for FIRST in Utah. Working behind the scenes, he’s helped teams acquire and set up equipment, secured funding to help them pay entrance fees and recruited volunteers to help FIRST fulfill its mission. He has even spent time convincing our legislators about the impact FIRST has on individuals and why we need state support to reach more students. We are so lucky to have him.”

Wayco also helps with fundraising, recruiting mentors and volunteers, and helps to make our local teams more sustainable. He has long been a mentor for Team 4598: Icarus Innovated and Team 7634: The New Hawks as well as working with other teams in the Canyons District. Ronald Strohm, the FRC coach at Alta High School shared “Wayco does a lot for all of Canyons district teams. He helps them set up equipment and mentors them. All the kids love him and want to be like him.” He is there when the students need help and is happy to encourage a love of engineering among the students he works with.

We all owe Wayco a debt of gratitude for his work in making FIRST Utah what it is today. His generosity knows no bounds.

Congratulations and THANK YOU WAYCO!

Come Showcase Your Team and Robot!

The DIYfest has asked our Utah FIRST teams to present at the STEM section of Craft Lake City's DIYfest  August 13, 14 & 15 in Salt Lake City.

Sharing your FIRST experience with our community is a great way to get more students and sponsors interested.

We would like to schedule times for teams to interact with festival attendees but we need to know which teams would like to participate by June 30th. Book your team's slot ASAP! Email Chelsey to sign up!
