See Our UW-Madison Graduation Look-Back

Remember your graduation day? See if it made our Facebook 60-year photo look-back of UW-Madison commencements. The 2015 UW-Madison ceremony features speaker and award-winning journalist Katie Couric. And, once again, SoHE is hosting special Recognition Ceremonies in Nancy Nicholas Hall for graduate students on May 15, 3-4pm, and undergraduates on May 16, 9-10:30am.

Kachinsky: SoHE Grad, Professional BMXer

Alumnus Brian Kachinsky (Consumer Science, '04) returned to SoHE to speak to Product Development Strategies in Retailing students. He shared how his degree and professional freestyle BMX career has taken him on an "off-road" less traveled, including trips to 35 countries plus marketing and product development with his sponsors. Student Feature: An MFA with 'Horse Power'

Designer and MFA student Cory Allen Linsmeyer has hitched his entire body of graduate work to horses. His "Horse Power" menswear is part of the the MFA Design Gallery exhibit opening May 7 and the full collection hits the Pulse: Threads Fashion Show runway, May 9. "‘Horse Power’ is an invitation to embrace your individuality, live more authentically, and ignite your spirit,” states Linsmeyer.

Sponem Appointed to Fed Advisory Council

SoHE alumna Kim Sponem (Consumer Science, '90) was appointed to an advisory council to the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. The chief executive of Summit Credit Union, Madison, will work on the board as a representative of the credit union industry. "My interests are in understanding the desires, needs, and behaviors of consumers," she explained in a Wisconsin State Journal article.

Video Series Promotes Majors 

Last month, SoHE launched the first in a series of videos designed to promote the school's majors. The series features student testimonials and debuted on YouTube with the Personal Finance program video. Advisors will use the SoHE-focused videos to attract high school seniors and undeclared college students. Additional videos are scheduled to roll out during summer 2015.

SoHE-Developed Carbon Saving App

Launched on Earth Day, the MyEarth app developed by SoHE Consumer Science Professor Nancy Wong and UW-Madison computer science students has received a lot of online buzz, including Time and Environmental News Network. Download the Apple or Android app to track personal, daily carbon footprints in an easy visual format—a growing and shrinking iceberg!

Faculty Receive Top Awards 

Several SoHE faculty and staff were recently honored with prestigious awards. Brian Christens received the Early Career Award from the Society for Community Research and Action. Majid Sarmadi was awarded the Spitze Land Grant Award. Carolina Sarmiento, Kristi Anderson, and Jennifer Gaddis were each presented Baldwin Awards. And, Michael Maguire received a Teaching Academy fellowship.
