Message from the Chair

School's out, enjoy the summer
Trevor Devnich

As school has ended and summer vacation begins for most families I find myself looking back at what seemed to be a blur of a year.  Maybe your kids have graduated college or university or maybe they are just transitioning into elementary, junior high or high school next year.  Either way I am sure it feels like just yesterday we were dropping them off for their first day of Grade 1.  Along this journey there have been many teachers, principals, and friends that have helped to influence and teach our kids how to be successful and develop into the fine young people they are today.
I look back at my last few years with CSC in the same light.  It seems like just yesterday I was the kid getting dropped off for Grade 1 at my first CSC Chapter meeting and now I am the 2018/2019 Calgary Chapter Chair.  How did I get here and where did the time go?
This past year we endeavoured to grow the Calgary Chapter membership, which we did.   We endeavoured to promote and host successful events, which we did.  We endeavoured to provide valuable education programs, which we did.  All these successes are a reflection of the dedication, respect, leadership and hard work of many individuals within this TEAM, and our strategy is to continue learning from and getting stronger with all these endeavours.
As time marches on and we all move in different directions and stages of our lives it is inspiring to know that within the CSC family we have people to lean on, confide in, learn with, make mistakes with, and ultimately grow with.   We are all teachers in our own way and whether its Grade 1, university or CSC we all have the opportunity to learn from ourselves and each other.
As we continue to move ahead as a Chapter I look forward to the challenges and hurdles we will face, and appreciate the learning curve I have as the Chapter Chair.   I will always be thankful for the chapter executive (teachers) I have working with me as I know we have a strong membership and dedicated chapter executive team that will continue to shine with A+ marks.

Schools out…..Enjoy the Summer!

2017 - 2018 Year in Review
Corinne Golding, FCSC RSWR

CSC Calgary had a great 2017-2018 program year.  We had five technical dinner meetings, one construction site tour (new downtown library), the Christmas social, plus the annual golf tournament, Ignite student competition and awards night, and the Connections Cafe trade show and dinner.  Average attendance at dinner meetings was 35 including members and non-members.  It would be great to increase attendance at this year's meetings, so please consider bringing someone new along.

Adam Develter did a great job organizing education courses for the Chapter.  Two courses were held over the 2017 - 2018 program year: Principles of Construction Documentation (PCD) course, and the Construction Contract Administrator course, with 9 students in each course.  Congratulations to all the successful students.

Kirstin Janes, Peter Hiebert, and Tim Simpson worked tirelessly to organize the second Ignite Student Competition held in January.  Students and faculty from SAIT's architectural technology and Mount Royal's interior design programs came together to develop real life collaborative design solutions.

Trevor Devnich and Jonathon Greenland organized a successful Connections Cafe this year.  The response from sponsors was very positive, and all in attendance were inspired by the Mount Everest experience shared by Andrew Brash.

Calgary Chapter was well represented at the annual conference in Edmonton, with 15 members present at the Association's Annual General Meeting.  The Chapter donated $10,000 to the Association at the AGM.  At the annual awards luncheon, longevity award recipients were recognized.  Congratulations to the following Calgary Chapter members:
  • Manfred Grote - 30 years
  • J.D. Eckmire, and Larry Shoesmith, CTR - 15 years
  • Bretan Baumgardt, CCCA; Monica Guzman, Kris Norman, Paul Ledaire, and Paul Scmidtke, RSW - 10 years
Chapter Awards of Merit were presented to Larry Shoesmith, CTR; Tim Simpson, and Corinne Golding, FSCS, RSW.
  • Larry Shoesmith: Along with being a strong supporter and sponsor of CSC Conferences and events, Larry has volunteered tirelessly of his time in many roles in the local Chapter executive. Larry is a mentor and friend, many of us tracing our own CSC affiliation to his influence. He has always maintained a strong relationship and friendship helping move our chapter forward.  Having filled many roles on the local Chapter executive, the current strength of our chapter is in part to Larry's support, mentoring and advice.  Larry continues to sponsor and support our Chapter and we respect and appreciate it.
  • Tim Simpson:  Chair of the Calgary chapter, continues to lead by example.  He consistently volunteers for special events including the golf tournament and student design competition. Tim's message in each newsletter is heartfelt and his personal thank you note to those attending chapter meetings is the sign of a true gentleman.
  • Corinne Golding: has been very active in the Calgary Chapter executive since she joined over 3 years ago.   She has taken on the role of Membership officer, and Newsletter Editor. Corinne is consistently providing information to the Specifier on monthly basis and is very prompt to welcome new members to the chapter. Her dedication to the chapter doesn’t stop there, she is always willing to step in and assist where help is required. Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm.

After an 8-year commitment to the Association the board of directors, and executive council, Peter Hiebert was inducted into the CSC College of Fellows.  Congratulations, Peter!  We look forward to Peter's undivided attention at the Chapter level, and we're happy to say Peter is the new Chapter membership officer.

Isn't it nice to know we clean up so well?
