Chair's Message

The Architectural industry is a macrocosm of professionals striving for excellence in the built environment, where ideologies, building practices, technology, and globalization transcend geographical locations and generations. The constantly evolving industry has created additional challenges for young professionals, as many recent graduates lack the necessary technical expertise, intrapersonal skills, and managerial traits to succeed.  Mentorship offers an opportunity for young professionals to overcome these challenges and for mentors to create a succession plan within their company and introduce new ideas. Mentoring is the process to transfer skills and knowledge, but also a collaborative relationship between two individuals working toward a common goal. It coexists as both informal and formal means of transmission of knowledge, guidance, and social support. I have been fortunate to have great mentors in both my practice of work at DIALOG and a mentor with the Toronto Construction Association’s ‘Young Construction Leaders’ that over the last 6 years have been ever patient, and never deterred from offering guidance. It was with this positive experience as a young professional that I wanted to give back to the community. 

With being a co-chair and mentor for the IGNITE Student Design Competition, it provided the opportunity to give back to the community through mentoring the next generation of young professionals. The students that participated in the competition had a range of experience from being either a 1st year to 3rd year student, or adult learner looking into a second career. Through the 3 day competition I ensured the students felt they had the opportunity to broaden their learning opportunities, provide technical guidance, instilling self-confidence, and of course creating a nurturing environment. 

Looking forward to next years’ opportunity for mentorship.

March Dinner Meeting Notice

Dave Hiemstra, Optics Lighting, will be presenting “NECB 2011 in Alberta – Impact on Design and the Industry”.  This is our annual joint meeting with CSC Edmonton chapter in Red Deer.  Please note, the meeting is on Thursday, March 16th from 5 to 8 p.m. With dinner starting at 5:45 p.m.

With the adoption of the NECB 2011 Energy Code in November there are big changes being made to the way we design and build new buildings.  Not only does it change what we put into a building, it has a much larger impact on the design process.  This presentation will focus on how this code is different than anything we’ve seen in Alberta previously and why it’s important that all fields in the industry learn the code. 

This presentation will cover:

1 - Where did the code come from and how it’s being adopted in Alberta
2 - Electrical requirements for code compliance
3 - How the code changes the way we design and build
4 - Enforcement of the code

Connections Café is where design and construction professionals network in an informal atmosphere over hors d’oeuvres and beverages.  Table top trade show runs from 4 to 8 pm.  

As an added benefit to attendees, guest speaker, Stephen Revay, FCSC, CCC, CFCC will present on the common failing of project participants, which will be of interest owners, design consultants and contractors.  The presentation will describe common failings of project participants, which frequently result in project overruns and resultant construction claims. Steve will discuss how owners, design consultants and contractors each contribute to the problem. Discussion will also deal with the quality of documents – are they the problem that some suggest – and the underutilized power of schedules to promote communication and collaboration.  Too often schedules are treated as deliverables and not tools used to enhance project performance. Final comments will be on the pitfalls of email.  Presentation runs from 4 to 5:30 pm (in an adjacent room), and is accredited for AAA self-reported structured learning.  FREE guest registration is limited to members of the design and construction community.  For your FREE ticket, go to Connections Café 2017 (If you are a product representative or distributor, consider sponsoring the event.)

The CSC Calgary IGNITE committee invited industry partners to join in celebrating design and specifications with students from Mount Royal University (MRU), Interior Design and SAIT, Architectural Technology in Calgary.  Students currently studying at MRU and SAIT within the two programs were invited to collaborate with industry mentors in this dynamic event. The IGNITE design competition fostered problem solving, collaboration and solutions-based outcomes over the course of a fast-paced weekend long competition.

The IGNITE Competition client was YO MOMMA, in association with the Music Mile Association (Youth Musicians of the Music Mile Alliance); both of these non-profit associations collaborate and are based out of the Inglewood Community.  
The competition mission was aimed to better integrate young professionals into the industry through mentorship and collaboration with Architectural & Design industry leaders.  


A brief overview of the competition: 
  • On behalf of the CSC Calgary Chapter, the IGNITE Competition Committee members, Gale LeBlanc, Stephanie Fargas, and Kirsten Janes, acted as "the bridge" between both schools and students.
  • The competition was launched at the Ironwood Stage & Grill in Inglewood, January 27, where students were introduced to the client, to each other, and teams were created
  • The teams began and finished the design collaboration "live" over the weekend of January 27 - 29 at McDonald Hall, SAIT, Calgary
  • 36 Students enrolled - approximately 12 from Mount Royal and 24 from SAIT. Most teams were comprised of two SAIT students and one MRU student
  • Part of the competition rules dictated that each design team must take one part of their design concept and write a specification with the “logged” help of industry mentors including specification writers, architects, interior designers, and manufacturer representatives who were available for consultation on each of the two days of the competition. Over 25 mentors from industry attended the “live” event over the two competition workshop days.
  • Both Mount Royal University Interior Design professors and SAIT School of Architectural Technology academic chairs were in full support of the competition, and were engaged, ready to help and fully participated in the 3-day event.  SAIT generously provided SAIT MacDonald Hall, as the competition venue. Mount Royal University has already committed to hosting the 2017-2018 competition next year.

The IGNITE Finale Awards Night was held at RGO Office Furnishings, February 10 with over 85 people attending.  Entertained by the YO MOMMA student members with live music, students’ team projects were prominently displayed on easels for all attendees to view.  The students were honoured for their hard work by CSC, SAIT and Mount Royal University, industry leaders, and the client, with the night concluding in the following awards:

Director's Forum

As the Calgary Chapter Director, I will be attending the Board of Director meetings from March 10 to 12th., and will be attending the Director’s Forum. This Forum is an informal meeting to discuss the good and the bad at the chapter level. This is a chance for Director’s to share what has gone well at the Chapter level, and to ask for advice from other Chapter Directors on local Chapter challenges.
 
As the Chapter Director, I will be the conduit between the association and the Calgary Chapter. I encourage you to forward any concerns or topics that you would like to have discussed or introduced in this Forum. Sdzikewich@mapei.com
