Dear CEMS Partner,

Best wishes for 2022 from our CEMS Office at the University of Cologne!

After two exhausting years, we are very happy to start on 1 April our next CEMS semester with all students in physical attendance at the University of Cologne.

To provide our students with a lot of practical insides, we have already started planning our curriculum with some of you. But we are still looking for more Skill Seminars and guest lectures, or other contributions for our CEMS programme. Please find further information below and let me know if you are interested. Thank you.

We can't wait to see some of you in person in 2022.

Enjoy reading!

WiSo professor Matthias Heinz wins first                  ERC Starting Grant in business administration              in Germany

Matthias Heinz, professor for strategy at the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences of the University of Cologne, receives the prestigious ERC Starting Grant for his project "Managing People - How Employees' Social Preferences Shape the Returns to Management Practices". Professor Heinz thus wins the first and so far only ERC Starting Grant for a researcher in business administration in Germany. With the Starting Grant, the European Research Council (ERC) supports excellent young scientists with up to 1.5 million euros for a period of five years.
In "Managing People", Matthias Heinz introduces new management practices in randomly selected workplaces in firms. The aim of the projects is to analyze how employees' social preferences shape the returns of management practices.

Matthias Heinz is a member of the school’s Key Research Initiative (KRI) „Behavioural Management Science“ and spokesperson of the Cluster of Excellence ECONtribute: Markets & Public Policy, as well as a lecturer within the CEMS MIM Programme. Further information please find here.

This project helps to clarify to what extent employees’ social preferences matter for the management, organizational structure and design of firms and workplace productivity. I have also incorporated these insights into my teaching as part of my CEMS MIM Business Project and my CEMS MIM course on Global Leadership”, says Matthias Heinz.
CEMS Skill Seminars
A big thank you to our Corporate Partners Amplifon, Bain & Company, Barilla, DHL Consulting, and McKinsey & Company for providing our CEMS students five online CEMS Skill Seminars last semester at UoC.
From May to Mid-July 2022 we are still looking for several CEMS Skill Seminars. We welcome proposals for seminars offered in person, either at your offices or on the UoC for half or full days.

CEMS Business Projects
We are very impressed by the amount of Business Projects that reached us for 2022. We would like to thank all contributors for 30+ interesting projects. We were able to accomodate nine projects for our spring cohort starting on 1 April 2022.
For those companies we couldn't accomodate in spring, we would like to offer the option to work on your projects with other WiSo students next fall term. Please let us know by mid-April if you are interested so that we can offer your projects to the different areas at our WiSo faculty.

CEMS Guest lectures
We have several options for CEMS guest lectures in the upcoming spring and in our fall semester starting in September 2022.
  • CEMS Global Citizenship (2 + 9. April 2022) conducted by Veronika Seitler-Käfer

Furthermore, we are always open to organise a get-together after your lecture if you would like to sponsor some snacks & drinks to mix and mingle with our students in a nice atmosphere.
