March 2016

At our networking lunch on 25th February I asked the 50 people in the room if they had made their decision about Europe yet. 20% said they hadn't, 10% were "come out" and a resounding 70% said they were in favour of staying in. So there is the message from a selection of Merton's small/medium businesses.

We'd welcome your views on our
Twitter poll here

The overall message from businesses is that business is good, so just to remind you that if you are looking to recruit to entry level jobs please use our "Take One" service that aims to match you to local people ready for work or apprenticeships. I strongly believe that recruiting people from our localities is good for our business and for them, so it's a win win all around.

We have lots of events coming up so help you connect with other businesses and to raise the profile of your business. It's the
launch of the Merton Best Business Awards on 15th March and it's not too late to get involved as a sponsor, so give us a call if you are interested.

For the first time in 6 years we are holding a
Golf day in association with the London Society of Chartered Accountants. Being held at the delightful Wimbledon Common Golf Club on 21st April, you can be healthy, network and raise your business profile. Interest is high, so book your place/team now!

New crowd-funding scheme to benefit local communities

Spacehive is a platform designed to support projects that benefit local public spaces. It allows anyone to put forward project ideas like a new community garden, rejuvenate a sports facility or a new playground, and anyone can fund them.

All Merton projects can be found on the ‘Merton Hive’ website:

Crowd-funding campaigns are a way to raise money and support for projects from a large number of people. They are all about getting lots of people involved and pledging their support – either financial or otherwise.

So, if you’re delivering a local project and would like to secure funding – or you have funding to deliver community projects and are looking for project ideas to support, Merton Hive could be the answer.

Disability - where do you sit?
By Merton Chamber Chief Executive Diana Sterck

On 16th February, as part of our support for local business, we brought together an event focusing on disability.  We wanted to stimulate a discussion between policy makers, those who are in business to support people with disabilities and employers – as part of Mental Health Awareness week it seemed the perfect opportunity.

We were hosted at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development’s amazing headquarters building in Wimbledon town centre and were privileged to have their Research and Policy Adviser for Diversity as one of our speakers.  Dianah Worman OBE has over 25 years experience in the field of diversity and set the scene, saying we need employers to work in a progressive way and there is huge potential for them to make a real impact – the secret is always to look at the person and not the disability.
