What Jails Cost: A look at spending in America's largest cities rotating GIF

Something is happening in cities across the United States.

Though jail populations have declined by 28 percent over the last decade, spending on jails has actually increased by 13 percent–and cost local governments $25 billion a year.

Money that could have been spent prioritizing community-based programs that uplift, rather than tear down, communities.

Our team of researchers noticed the trend, and we investigated. Now you can find the cost of jails in 48 major US cities with our new interactive tool: What Jails Cost.

But there is opportunity in these numbers.

If we work together to encourage local governments in these 48 cities to correct their jail budgets, they would save $2.2 billion a year. For many of us, cities are more than just home–they are our communities and our pride.

Share this new tool with your friends and family on Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn to spread awareness of what jails are costing your city. Money that can be reinvested in social services, health, and treatment.
