December 2015 News From the ERC
SEASON'S GREETING & HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM THE                                            ENTERPRISE RESEARCH CENTRE

November and December have been busy months for the ERC and we look forward to 2015 and another busy year which we hope will take us closer to our objective of being the Leading Edge Centre for research on SME growth and productivity

Making an Impact
ERC researchers have been influential in informing 2 key national reports in the last month.

ERCs work was widely cited in ‘The Scale-Up Report on UK Economic Growth’, an independent report published in late November by Sherry Coutu CBE, on behalf of the UK’s Information Economy Council which specifically focused on action to support high growth potential firms.
As well as drawing on our Research Insight, ERC was identified as potentially having a future role in helping to deliver on several of the report’s recommendations.

Last week saw the launch of the British Business Bank’s first Annual Assessment of the market for external small business finance.
ERC commented on a draft of the report pre-publication and our research on
"Revisiting the Vital 6%’, Trade Credit, Business Angels and on Discouraged Borrowers" all helped shape the BBBs view of the market.

LEP Innovation Benchmarks
2002-2010

The UK Innovation Survey provides information on product/service and process innovation as well as the barriers to innovation activity for a relatively large number of UK firms. In this paper we present the first local economic area analysis of this data derived from four surveys covering the 2002-04, 2004-06, 2006-08 and 2008-10 periods.

The analysis is possible as locational codes (postcodes) have been matched with innovation data for the first time enabling the innovation profile of individual Local Economic Areas (LEAs) to be captured. The current analysis relates to the 2002-2010 period.

New data relating to the more recent 2010-2012 period is due to be released towards the end of 2014. We welcome suggestions for other indicators or analysis which would be useful. Analysis has been undertaken by Stephen Roper, Karen Bonner and Jim Love at ERC.

LEP Growth Dashboard Workshops

The Enterprise Research Centre (ERC)  in collaboration with GrowthAccelerator conducted a series of one day workshops around the UK.
LEP's from all  Local Areas were invited  for discussion on the Growth Dashboard and its findings. The aim of the Workshops were to ensure that our  future work delivers some of what  LEP colleagues said they would find most helpful. ERC and Growth Accelelerator will be using the feedback given by LEP  colleagues to develop a new version of the Dashboard in 2015.

The Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) Growth Dashboard published in June 2014 has been developed by the Enterprise Research Centre in partnership with GrowthAccelerator.
