Last Chance Saloon?
Creating and Supporting a Local Pipeline of Growth Businesses.

Mark Hart, Deputy Director, ERC has written a blog for the LEP Network.
The UK has historically one of the poorest records internationally of the proportion of its business population that grow.  The most recent data from the ONS indicate that this continues to be the case.  The problem is not new and has been the focus of public policy for decades without any impact on the headline indicators despite the success of many of our UK-owned small businesses.

Business Dynamics and Productivity
Mark Hart and Michael Anyadike-Danes, ERC Aston Business School contributed a chapter to the new OECD Publication Business Dynamics and Productivity.

Abstract: Business dynamics plays an important role not only as a driver of job creation but also as an engine of reallocation and productivity growth. This book aims at providing new evidence on business dynamics from different countries and at shedding new light on the heterogeneous responses of firms to economic shocks, with a particular focus on the impact of the last decade’s global financial crisis. All chapters in this book highlight the importance of going beyond the average firm paradigm when analysing business dynamics, accounting for different firm characteristics such as size, age, ownership and trade status.

ERC Industrial Strategy and Brexit
The UK is currently experiencing a significant reorientation in economic policy. The ESRC is supporting a small project designed to help ERC consider its future role in terms of policy advice and development. Over the past month we have undertaken a series of illuminating consultations with a range of stakeholders. Drawing on the insights we have gained we will be producing a short report that will identify key knowledge gaps and pathways to impact for ERC going forward.

Universities and regional development
Over the last decade Turkey has established over 80 new universities, with public sector development being guided by a ‘one university in each province’ policy. This expansion and its implications were discussed at a recent British Council funded seminar in Izmir. A number of UK academics presented papers (Jeremy Howells, Kristal Miller, Robert Huggins, Elizabeth Chell, Stephen Roper, Maksim Belitski) alongside Turkish colleagues. ERC research on university-business collaboration contributed to the conversation.
