Griesbach Shake At The Lake and Art In The Park return.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 17th
1:00 pm to 6:00 pm
Perron Berger Park
(Pegasus Blvd., by Bedford Basin)

It’s tough to say who is looking forward to the annual Griesbach Shake At The Lake community event more.

The kids... who can’t get enough  of the bouncy castles, face painting, balloon animals and games?

Or the adults... who get a chance to check out OVER 30 EDMONTON ARTISTS at the Griesbach “Art in the Park” Art Walk or enjoy a cold brew or crisp glass of wine in the beer gardens while rocking out to our incredible live band.

Every year it just keeps getting better and better. This year, we’re pleased to announce we won’t have just any bouncy castle – but a full-on OBSTACLE BOUNCER. We’ll also have a smaller bouncy castle just for the wee ones.

You might be surprised to learn that Griesbach is home to a great musical talent, who will be performing at this year’s Shake at the Lake with his trio.

PETE TURLAND is a Juno-nominated musician who has been in critically acclaimed rockabilly and blues bands on both sides of the Atlantic ocean: The Nervous Fellas, The Rockin’ Highliners, Harpdog Brown & the Bloodhounds, and Ray Condo and his Ricochets. (See GCL website for full bio.)

If you have an up-to-date Griesbach Community League membership, you will receive wristbands for each child in the household, giving them free access to all children’s activities (facepainting, bouncy castles, balloon artists). Non-members will be charged $5/child or $10/ household.

An annual membership is only $25/family, and will be available at the event and online. As a member, you are helping to support the community league and our ability to host events. For a full list of member benefits, please visit our website.

We hope you can come and shake it up with us on
September 17th!

Below: Pete Turland (lead gtr) and his band will put the “shake” in the Shake At The Lake. Betcha didn’t know a Juno-nominated artist lived right here in Griesbach. Photos from 2015 Art In The Park. And yes, the art is for sale!

Griesbach Playground Build Delayed Until Spring 2017

The City of Edmonton has come back to the Griesbach Playground Committee and Community League with some disappointing news.

With the amount of rainfall this summer, playground projects have been delayed across the City. With this delay, the City cannot guarantee that the playground will be built fully this season and has recommended construction start as one of the first projects in Spring 2017. This is disappointing news, but it is the safest option and allows Major General Griesbach School to use the school grounds without restriction over the fall and winter. Work is being done behind the scenes – completing the undergroundelectrical work and pre-purchasing the playground equipment, which will help speed things up in the spring.

This is unfortunate news for everyone, but we are working with our partners to minimize the delay as much as possible.

GRIESBITS & BITES

  • We’d like to thank the Castle Downs Lions Club for contributing $5,000 to our playground. After decades serving the community this group is disbanding. On behalf of everyone you’ve helped over the years, thank you!
  • More good news: Rosslyn Inn & Suites. is now officially a Gold Level Sponsor!
  • A new set of traffic lights is scheduled to go in at Pegasus Blvd and 137th Avenue. The City estimates completion for the end of September.
  • Excessive rain has delayed road and utility construction in the NW corner of Griesbach. Canada Lands is aiming to re-open Griesbach Road by November 1, pending further delays.
  • There’s still time to register for the Griesbach  Dance Company’s fall program. Classes include “Little Performers” (age 3 - 5), Ballet, Jazz & Lyrical and Hip Hop (all ages 6 - 12). Details at griesbachdancecompany.com
  • Construction is moving ahead in the commercial development despite significant delays due to our wet summer. Shoppers Drug Mart was originally slated to open in the summer. They are hoping to be ready in the fall.
  • Construction is now underway on a mixed use 4-Storey Condominium and retail space on Griesbach Parade, across from the new hotel. Another 4-storey condominium project is about to begin near the same walkway.
  • New historical storyboards are going in at the top of Central Park Hill. They will tell the story of the Griesbach Garrison which sat on this site.
  • Griesbach Community League representatives have been part of a committee tasked with developing theme and design ideas for a fourth lake. A truly unique design concept has been presented to the City of Edmonton, along with some fitness and recreation elements we think residents will absolutely love. We hope to have good news to share soon!
  • GCL  will be sending out a new online version of our community survey this fall to determine what our next priorities should be. What is the next project we should pursue? We want to hear from you. Details to follow.
  • Griesbach is teeming with wildlife. Currently there are three hawks hanging around Patricia Lake... which is also home to a marmot. Earlier in the summer, there was a pelican on Bedford Basin.
