Light it up, Griesbach...

The Griswolds of Griesbach Contest is back!

Every year, people get into the holiday spirit by clinging to icy rooftops to hang colourful lights that brighten long winter nights.

To reward your efforts, Griesbach Community League has assembled a team of judges to pick the three most glowing examples of dedication to the art of festive illumination. Prizes include:

Grand Prize: $150 Home Depot Gift Card
Runner Up: $100 Home Depot Gift Card
Third Prize: $50 in Shoppers Drug Mart Gift Card

The contest is named in honour of the near maniacal efforts of Clark Griswold to create the perfect yuletide holiday for his family in the classic movie, Christmas Vacation. Griswold boasted a light display that churned out enough wattage to shut down the entire power grid.

Winners will be contacted before year-end and announced in our next newsletter! Good luck.

Congratulations to Griesbach Dance Company for a successful public debut at the Festival of Trees. Wave after wave of dancers from our community dazzled the audience with their amazing moves.

Community Update

  • We are pleased to welcome Shoppers Drug Mart to our neighbourhood. This Griesbach owned business recently opened its doors. The selection of Essential Food items is quite impressive. Plus, a great place to pick up holiday chocolates. Check it out. The next building is said to be opening in the spring.

  • Griesbach Road is paved but still not open. Apparently the delay is due to the fact the lights have not yet been installed. Hopefully it's not much longer.

  • We continue to receive reports about vehicle and garage break ins. In nearly all of the cases, vehicles or garage entrances were unlocked. Lock up and keep valuables out of sight. In many case they are simply looking for loose change. Join the growing number of residents who are leaving back alley lights on at night to discourage prowlers, or installation motion-activated lights.

  • Griesbach Community League will be releasing our next community survey this January. Our goal is to get a sense of your priorities as residents.

  • There have been complaints about the excessive noise from construction sites along Griesbach Road on evenings and weekends. A resident contacted the City, which has contacted the builder. If you have any complaints about issues ranging from noise to graffiti to damage in parks, contact 311. They are quite responsive.

  • As we reflect on the year that was, 2016 might be remembered as The Year of Pokemon Go. Despite the inconvenience and increased traffic, residents responded with grace and dignity – and many were enthusiastic participants. (We should have printed "I Survived the 2016 Pokemon Go Craze" t-shirts!)

  • Speaking of temperature, hopefully it warms up and we get a nice dump of snow so the kids can enjoy the toboggan hill over the holidays!
