State Conference Agenda Set

The 12th annual SPAN Ohio state conference will take place on May 2, 2015 at the Ramada Plaza Hotel and Conference Center in Columbus, Ohio.   We are pleased to be working with Healthcare-NOW! in presenting an Everybody INstitute.   Ben Day, Director of Organizing at Healthcare-NOW! will be the keynote speaker.   Part of the agenda includes creating a strategy plan for the next year in which all can participate.

In addition to Ben Day, presenters include Sean Nestor of Toledo, Debbie Silverstein, State Director of SPAN Ohio and Representative Kathleen Clyde, who will do a workshop on how to develop a working relationship with your legislators.
Registration is now open and we urge you to register early.   Please check the SPAN website for further details at Look for the round, blue Register Now! button.

Medicaid Continuation

SPAN Ohio supports the continuation of the expanded Medicaid program for Ohioans who qualify.   SPAN members are active in the coalitions around the state that are advocating for the continuation of the program and access to health care.

SPAN Ohio does not support the provision where Medicaid recipients would be charged a premium.   While the premium sounds low at $15-22 per month, for those living below 138% of poverty, that means a couple meals a week.  There should be no barriers to care.

Help support our work on this issue by contacting your elected representative.   Leave a message stating that you support the continuation of the Medicaid program without premiums or other barriers to care.   You can leave your message for any representative or senator by calling the Ohio Legislative Information Hotline at 1-800-282-0253 Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.

Medicare's 50th Birthday

Medicare turns 50 on July 30, 2015.   Medicare remains the most popular health care plan in the nation, serving those over 65 and the disabled.   A 50th birthday truly deserves a celebration.
We are in the planning stages for celebrations in Columbus, Cleveland, Toledo and Cincinnati.   If you would like to help in planning for those locations, contact your Regional Coordinator.  You can find your Regional Coordinator and contact information here
If you can't participate in a celebration in one of those locations, the best thing you can do is to contact your Representative in Congress and both of your Senators to let them know that you want to see Medicare protected, improved and expanded to cover everyone.  You can find your Representative here.   Contact for your Senators is below:

HR 676, The Expanded and Improved Medicare for All Act, Has Been Reintroduced

Congressman John Conyers (D-MI) has reintroduced The Expanded and Improved Medicare for All Act, HR 676, into the 114th Congress.   Representative Marcy Kaptur is an original sponsor and Representative Joyce Beatty signed on as a co-sponsor soon after the reintroduction.
We need to let the rest of the Ohio delegation to Congress know that we support HR 676.  Please call or write your Representative and urge him or her to sign on as a co-sponsor to HR 676.  Find your representative here.

:   Do not be shy in contacting elected representatives that you know don't support HR 676.  It is just as important, if not more so, to contact them.  They need to know how their constituents feel and what they support.  While they may not sign on as co-sponsors, you can make a definite impact in softening their opposition.

Check it Out!

Have you visited SPAN's redesigned website lately?   If so, you'll notice a link to YouTube.  Yes, SPAN Ohio has a YouTube channel.   Check it out and listen to interviews with Congressman John Conyers, journalist TR Reid, Benjamin Day and others.   Be sure to listen to Criminal Insurance, a short skit that compares police protection to our health care system.   The question is:  We'd never put up with that when it comes to our safety forces.   Why do we put up with it when it comes to our health?   Rise up!

Lobby Day

SPAN Ohio will be conducting a Lobby Day in Columbus on February 26, 2015.   If you would like to participate, contact State Director Debbie Silverstein at  Materials will be provided and lobbying will be done in teams.

Case Western Reserve Med Students Shake it Up

Medical students at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine have formed a chapter of SNaHP, a student chapter of PNHP.   They have been active with letters to the editor and an interview on the radio.   You can read the transcript here and there is a link there to the actual recording.  Congratulations to Vanessa Van Doren, Joshua Niforatos and Emily Stott!
