In the Garden

Welcome Spring!  In light of this beautiful season, we are delighted to share with you some recent happenings and highlights of the past year.

First, we are pleased to announce the launch of our new website, www.vburtdesigns.com and our new brand.  Virginia Burt Designs Inc./Visionscapes Landscape Architects, Inc. now operates as Virginia Burt Designs, Canada Inc. and includes a subsidiary Virginia Burt Designs, USA Inc. Yes, we are a multinational! This has taken much planning to make it happen - thank you to all, it truly takes a village.

Secondly, the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects, the professional association of landscape architects in Canada, has just announced it’s 2015 National Awards of Excellence.  Only ten projects were chosen as preeminent examples in Canadian landscape architecture, honoring distinctive design, ground-breaking research, and sustainable landscape management.

Virginia Burt Designs won the National Award of Excellence, Award of Merit for Residential Design. The design for Acadia Point, located in a beautiful and environmentally sensitive coastal area, incorporates native stone and vegetation to create a series of outdoor living spaces that meld seamlessly with the greater landscape.

Landscape Awards and Projects:
In May 2014, we were delighted to receive a Palladio Award for our work on a wonderful private garden in Cleveland, in the category of Exterior Gardens and Landscapes.  This is the only National award in America for work in the traditional style. Virginia was invited to participate with Cawrese and Associates on a team for the Canyon Re-Design Competition.  The team tied for First Place in the design competition.  It was a wonderful opportunity to engage in thoughtful design and planning for one of nature's greatest landscapes.

We are also pleased to share that we have completed the Angie Fowler Adolescent and Young Adult rooftop garden for University Hospitals Rainbow Babies. The Garden has become a beautiful place where children and their families, as well as hospital staff, can find fun and solace at a stressful time.

Virginia was honored to be the Guest Editor of the Summer Edition of the journal of landscape architecture in Canada, Landscapes/Paysages. The journal, which focused on healing gardens, celebrated the work of Virginia and other landscape architects.

Book Review -- Cornelia Hahn Oberlander, the Making of a Modern Landscape by Susan   Herrington.
Virginia has had the distinct pleasure and privilege to spend time with Cornelia Hahn Oberlander. As one of the most decorated landscape architects of our time, Cornelia, 93, has been creating modernist landscapes for six decades.  As part for Virginia’s appreciation of Cornelia, she has written a review on Herrington’s new book -- an excellent read on Cornelia’s inspiring life and work. Look for the review in Landscapes/Paysages, Summer 2015
Collaboration with Richard Mandelkorn
A highlight of the summer of 2014 included shooting our project in Blandford, Nova Scotia with photographer, Richard Mandelkorn. Richard, selected by the homeowner, has long crafted beautiful photographs for many publications including Architectural Digest Magazine. Richard captured the many moods of this Atlantic gem with lovely composition, crisp detail and rich color. Visit mandelkornphotography.com to see examples of his work.
