Fall 2019

Decatur City Dance

Did you know that Decatur School of Ballet has a resident performing dance company? Decatur City Dance is in its 67thseason. Over 50 Decatur School of Ballet students have reached an elite level of dance and have been selected through an audition process to be members of the company. Dancers who excel in ballet, jazz, modern and tap make up the 4 student groups – Apprentice Ensemble, Junior Ensemble, BareGrounds and Junior Rhythm Keepers. Also under the company umbrella are the Rhythm Keepers, an adult tap company, as well as AboutFace, the professional contemporary modern and jazz company. Decatur City Dance is a not for profit organization which is solely funded by dues, donations and grants. DCD was recently awarded a grant by the Decatur Craft Beer Festival, to be presented at the Decatur Business Association meeting in December. DCD is also selling car magnets, for $10 per magnet, and plan other fundraising activities throughout the season. On the weekend of November 9th and 10th, the Junior and Apprentice Ensembles will present “A Day with Mother Goose – NEW GOOSE!”, featuring DCD alum and DSOB teacher Danny Bevins. Please visit our website to purchase tickets or to donate.

Why So Expensive?

Many of you have wondered why costumes are so expensive this year. Here is the answer: We have added a performance fee to the costume fee this season (as printed in the school policies) in order to offset the rise in cost for the Ferst Theater. Many of you may have noticed all of the wonderful renovations at Ferst last season. Those renovations were expensive, so the rental fees reflect those expenses. Therefore, we have had to raise our prices to help offset the additional rental fees. Please know that we work hard to keep our prices affordable and that we are conscious of the fact that you have a choice in where your dancers train.
