Dear Ashbury Families,

As we welcome students to orientation activities and return to class next week please review the following important updates regarding immunization expectations at Ashbury College.

Immunization against COVID-19
The Ministry of Education has introduced a vaccination disclosure policy for all publicly funded school board employees, as well as staff in private schools for the 2021–22 school year. Families at Ashbury are also attesting to the vaccination status of their children and continue to upload documentation to Magnus. Please note that we have had near-universal vaccination compliance, first and second doses, for staff and students and we are implementing specific measures for those who are ineligible at this time or still in the process of completing their vaccinations.

Enhanced protective strategies are required to protect our most vulnerable members of the community, including our youngest students, who are ineligible for the COVID-19 vaccination at this time. Given the nature of the highly transmissible Delta variant and the evidence of the effectiveness of vaccines in keeping communities safe, we have updated our COVID protocols to include the following:

Mandatory Vaccination Policy
As we have continued to emphasize the importance of vaccination to a safe school re-opening, the College now requires full vaccination for all eligible students, employees, volunteers, and contracted services who will be accessing the campus for in-person work, learning, and activities. This includes Junior School and Senior School Day and Boarding students. If eligible children have not already been vaccinated, the school is requiring that they receive full vaccination by no later than October 18, 2021. In accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code, exemptions will only be considered for defined medical conditions as determined by a medical practitioner and/or for reasons of religion or creed. We have very few families who have identified that they are considering such requests. A request form and details for required documentation can be accessed through wellness@ashbury.ca.
  • Eligible students who are fully vaccinated with an approved Health Canada or WHO vaccine may participate in all school in-person learning, sports, and co-curricular programs and will require daily screening.
  • Eligible students who have a single dose of an approved Health Canada or WHO Vaccine will be limited to in-person classroom learning only with additional protective measures in place and may not participate in in-person sports or co-curricular activities and will have alternate arrangements for meals. Daily screening is required and students may require periodic antigen testing.
  • Eligible students who have not yet received a Health Canada or WHO-approved vaccine will be subject to daily antigen testing and will be limited to in-person classroom learning with additional protective measures in place and may not participate in in-person sports or co-curricular activities and will have alternate arrangements for meals.
  • Eligible students who remain fully unvaccinated by October 18, 2021, without an approved medical exemption may be subject to ongoing measures including not being permitted to return to campus for in-person learning and move to a limited distance learning format to complete their studies. Families may also choose to withdraw their enrollment from Ashbury College at any time prior to this date.
  • Families are required to complete the Attestation of Vaccination Status and provide proof of vaccination for eligible students (those born in 2009 or earlier) using the attached confidential link. This is past due and must be completed before any return to campus is possible. Please do not send your child to school if this has not been completed.
  • To further support providing a safe learning environment the school may implement, routine rapid antigen testing for all students, including those who are ineligible to receive vaccinations at this time (those born prior to 2009).
Please note that measures are subject to change as we work with Ministry, OPH and our school networks and advisors in ensuring the safest school environment possible.

Thanks go out to our families for the high level of cooperation as we work to full vaccination rates for all eligible in our community and add protective measures as needed. The response rates have been truly outstanding and it is clear how much people value a safe and healthy return to school classes and activities for our students.

Sincerely,

Mr. Norman Southward
