Advent 2018 Newsletter

Greetings for the coming Nativity of the Lord!

There is a wonderful Orthodox hymn for Nativity that expresses so well the vocation of the iconographer:

What shall we offer You, O Christ, Who for our sakes has appeared on earth as man? Every creature made by You offers You thanks. The angels offer You a hymn; the heavens a star; the Magi, gifts; the shepherds their wonder; the earth, its cave, the wilderness, the manger. And we offer You a Virgin Mother….”

Iconographers offer to Christ the work their hands, as an act of worship and in the prayer that  through their icons divine beauty will be born in others.

It seems there are seasons in iconography as well as in weather. While we have spent most of the past four years making mosaics, our commissions over the past few months have been mainly for painted icons. We hope you enjoy perusing the latest fruits of our labours!

Next week, from 17th-21st December, Aidan is presenting five programmes about icons on BBC Radio 4. Tune in from 1.45-2.00pm.

He was asked to speak about the process of painting an icon of the Annunciation from its beginning to end. You can listen to an extract here.

Videos of the process will also be available on iPlayer.
