Local actions are key to Europe’s energy security – Joint Declaration of European Networks

Six European networks combine their forces in the light of EU energy security. The joint declaration pledges for empowering local communities, launching an information campaign on energy savings, disseminating the results of short, medium and long-term actions implemented in the framework of the Covenant of Mayors in order to boost their replication, and to take action on the wider 2030 framework on energy and climate policies.

Local authorities and citizens are the ones to build a new energy landscape in Europe
That was the message during the event, co-organized by Climate Alliance together with Friends of the Earth Europe, REScoop.eu, Cooperatives Europe, CECODHAS and Euro Coop during the European Sustainable Energy Week (24-27 June 2014). Thomas Pensel from the city of Mainz, Climate Alliance member, presented how a local authority can support citizen engagement and help to build a new energy landscape.
“We are already strongly engaging at the local level but European leaders should engage together with us as well. We need to Team up in Europe for a sustainable energy future and local achievements should be taken into account when designing the climate and energy policies for 2030” Tine Heyse, Board Member of Climate Alliance and Deputy Mayor for the city of Ghent, explicitly highlighted in a high level panel organized at the premises of the Committee of Regions. For more takeaways from EUSEW, please go here.

Mayors Adapt - The new EU initiative on Climate Adaptation is taking shape

Since its launch, more and more cities joined the Mayors Adapt initiative and engage in action on adaptation to climate change. So far, the city of Bologna, Antwerp and the German city of Worms already officially signed the Mayors Adapt initiative; Barcelona, Glasgow, Munich, Copenhagen, Naples, Glasgow and Rostock have signaled their interest to sign up for Mayors Adapt.
The Mayors Adapt now counts also on the active participation of regions, provinces and others, such public authorities, who can put their resources and know-how at the service of signatories. The 2014 Call for LIFE Climate Action Grants has now been launched. The LIFE Climate Action sub-programme will provide €44.26 million in 2014 to develop and implement innovative ways to respond to the climate change challenge across Europe, with one of the priority areas on LIFE Climate Change Adaptation. More info can be found here.

We invite you to the Mayors Adapt Signatory Ceremony with European Commissioner for Climate Action Connie Hedegaard on 16th of October 2014 in Brussels. The event brings together cities taking EU-wide leadership in adaptation to climate change and creates a forum to exchange ideas as well as best practices on local activities. Find out more about organizational details, registration and the preliminary agenda here. And don’t miss to check out what Climate Alliance members say about it: Mayors Adapt on YouTube.
Covenant of Mayors: Release of new templates

The Covenant of Mayors Office and the Joint Research Centre have strived over the past months to enhance and strengthen the Covenant reporting framework and associated processes (submission, evaluation and feedback).
With this in mind, they have revised the SEAP template and produced the new monitoring template. The template and the comprehensive reporting guidelines can be found in the library at the Covenant of Mayors webpage.

The SEAP_Alps Action Tool is now available

The Action Tool provides valuable assistance to municipalities working on the elaboration of a Sustainable Energy Action Plan (SEAP) in the framework of the Covenant of Mayors initiative.
Up to 100 different actions are listed in the form of project sheets ready to download as MS-word files. The sheets offer a brief description of the project and allow the municipality to adapt it to the local conditions in terms of duration, investment and energy or CO2 saving potential. They also include links to reference municipalities or agencies who already implemented this project. Access is possible without any registration procedure and the information is available in English, German, French, Italian and Slovenian language.

In the upcoming months, as a follow-up of the study tour, the 13 participants will organize or join multiplying events in their respective countries to make the larger European public aware of what they have seen in Peru and the impact of our unsustainable western consumption model on the populations in the South.
