The Young People of Soccer Recycle/DUSC Rocked the Soccer Fields!

Nineteen teenagers from New York City, three coaches and three parents shared their passion for soccer and generous donations of soccer gear with teams across Guatemala this month, leaving smiles in their wake. Additionally, generous families have sponsored SEVENTEEN children (so far!) to go to school through Xela AID's Work Study Scholarship Program (children and sponsors to be announced soon)!

Xela AID is exceedingly grateful to Soccer Recycle and the Downtown United Soccer Club and all the individuals involved for sharing themselves so completely with soccer teams in Antigua, Xela, and Santa Cruz de Laguna/Atitlan.

Our New Third Floor in Photos

During recent Xela AID trips, the new 3rd floor got an incredible workout! From lunches for volunteer groups to literacy classes, to Leaders meetings and English tutoring, the new, beautiful space was all a buzz with activity! "I can't imagine how we got along before without the space," Leslie Baer Dinkel, Xela AID's executive director commented.

The new floor and welcome center will be dedicated during Xela AID's upcoming trip in August. From construction to recent use, see our new Third Floor in our album THIRD FLOOR IN PHOTOS.

New Xela AID Computer Lab
Up and Running

The computer laboratory envisioned several years ago to connect kids in San Martín to the larger world was realized this past week! The new 12-computer laboratory for the use of school classes which currently have zero access to computers was constructed on Xela AID's new 3rd floor and augments a small lab of three computers currently used by kids individually to do homework.

The lab was installed during the volunteer and soccer trip "Soccer Recycle/Downtown United Soccer Club" by Xela AID CFO and Treasurer Mel Dinkel with help from Geordie Frei, Matthew Stone, and Sofia Gomez Perez. Geordie's expertise made it possible to properly set the computers up for students and to get the lab completed on time. "His mentoring of Sofia was also very much appreciated," Mel noted.

"We are very grateful to all those who have made this possible," Mel continued. "Schools in the area having access to a computer lab will open up a whole new world to hundreds of kids who now just learn about computers in theory."

That list includes major donors Cliff Hague, the SG Foundation, the Arthur B. Schultz Foundation and a number of other individual donors who helped along the way. We thank you all! Thanks, also, to those who have made the Betty Rikalo Welcome Center (Xela AID's new 3rd floor facility) possible, and who will be named at the floor's inauguration in August.
