Chrissie Cameron-Boshart Memorial Dinner and
Toy Auction

On an unseasonably warm November evening last year, a large crowd gathered once again for the 15th annual gala dinner and toy auction benefiting The Teresa Group organised by one of The Teresa Group’s most dedicated champions, Don Cameron and his daughter Joanne Baker. A behind-the-scenes peek will show you a group of committed and passionate toy industry professionals working out how to wow the crowd with VIP guests and offer the best-ever selection of auction items – and they do just that, year after year.

The night began with a captivating and inspiring speech from youth activist, Ashley Murphy. Ashley spoke not only about her journey being born with HIV and her role as a young leader and motivational speaker but also her special connection with The Teresa Group and how the organization had helped to support her and her family. A standing ovation was a fitting tribute to this remarkable young woman who has grown into a poised an accomplished speaker with an important and powerful message.

The appearance of sports celebrities are an exciting and much-anticipated part of this event. This year former MLB pitcher, Ray Burris, former Toronto Blue Jays MVP catcher, Pat Borders and former Toronto Blue Jays catcher and sports analyst, Gregg Zaun enthralled the audience with behind-the-scenes tales and posed for countless photographs with fans and admirers.

Given the extensive silent auction and the fact that the holidays were just around the corner, no-one went home empty handed but it was the children and families who are part of The Teresa Group who were the real winners, benefiting from this fundraiser all year round.

The Teresa Group is proud to launch our new Strategic Plan. The plan will guide the focus of the organization from January 2016 to December 2018. Three strategic areas of focus for this period are:
  1. Position The Teresa Group as a leader on issues related to children and families affected by HIV
  2. Provide targeted unique and quality programming to clients
  3. Enhance and strengthen everything we do through strategic partnerships
The development of the plan involved a broad consultation process including those who use the programs and services of the agency, community partners, volunteers, staff and supporters. The plan also includes indicators of success against which we can measure progress. The board will monitor the progress of the plan throughout the three year period.

Program Focus

At a recent national meeting focused on infant feeding and HIV, a presenter from another province held up the booklet “Is Formula Good for my Baby?” and spoke about what a wonderfully useful resource it is and how much they had used it. The booklet, developed by The Teresa Group and CATIE, was designed to answer questions that new moms living with HIV often have about formula feeding their babies. We hear from moms all the time who tell us how useful it is and it was gratifying to know it is being used across the country in different settings by other service providers.

On a chilly October morning a team of fifteen runner/walkers gathered to participate in the Toronto Waterfront Marathon Charity Challenge. While most of us completed the 5k, our fearless Board President, Marcel Watier, completed the half marathon! Marcel was also our top fundraiser and helped us achieve a total of $8,644! Way to go The Teresa Group Dream Team!

(PS - join us for this year’s event on October 16th 2016. Watch for details in this newsletter and on our website)

The holidays can be a difficult time for many families and with your help we made a difference - our 2015 Holiday Gift Campaign was a huge success! We raised a total of $5,520 that helped us to hold a wonderful holiday party for families complete with turkey dinner, scrumptious desserts and a range of exciting activities for kids of all ages. Almost 200 families registered for our Holiday Gift Program, helping us to make sure that infants, toddlers, children and teens received wonderful age-appropriate gifts. We also distributed 210 holiday grocery cards and emergency food packages. Your ongoing support helped us offer a joyful holiday for hundreds of children and families affected by HIV. Thank you!
