June 2014

Welcome to the first edition of our newsletter!
This bi-monthly newsletter gives you an opportunity to keep in touch with what's happening at The Teresa Group and will contain information about special events, programs and services. Please feel free to pass it along to colleagues, friends and others who might be interested.

The Mane Event

On Sunday April 27th the Schwarzkopf ASK Academy was once again a hive of activity as event founder, Steve Roy, worked his magic. Steve is one of our most dedicated volunteers and has spearheaded this event for an amazing 17 years, motivating and encouraging his colleagues to donate their time to help The Teresa Group support children and families affected by HIV. Event sponsor, Schwarzkopf, not only offered us their beautiful space and their event planning expertise, but  also brought stylists from Solo Bace, Lift Salon & Spa, Abby's Hair and Salon Glamour to participate in the event.
Thanks to the efforts of The Mane Event Committee (Steve from Solo Bace, Heidi and Stracey from LIft Salon & Spa, Abbi and Christie from Schwarzkopf, volunteers Marianne and Marissa as well as our own Volunteer Coordinator, Constance), the event was once again a huge success. Seventeen stylists offered 100 hair cutting and styling services, raising over $25,000 for Teresa Group programs and services! Thank you to all our generous donors who contributed to the Brick Wall of Compassion. The silent auction was busy all day with some fierce bidding on an amazing array of items including restaurant gift certificates, a Dyson ball vacuum cleaner, Schwarzkopf professional hairdryers and a variety of gift baskets, jewelry and other packages. Raffle Prizes were once again in high demand - a gold and sapphire necklace, Montreal trip package, Marathon diver's watch and an abundant gift basket of Schwarzkopf products. This year we also offered Tarot Card reading, brow care, make-up application and a professional photographer who captured participants to show off their new look.

Summer Camp - Call for Volunteers!
Remember those summers at camp when you were a kid? The Teresa Group summer camp will take place in August and we are looking for a few more volunteer camp counsellors. NEW! Weekend Retreat
The Teresa Group has initiated a brand new program! On the weekend of May 31st and June 1st we ran our very first retreat offered to children and youth attending the "Leading the Way" groups. Hot on the heels of the success of summer camp, we began to formulate this idea last year. Through a range of outdoor activities and challenges, the retreat offers children and youth a chance to reflect on the skills they have learned in the groups over the past 2 months and the friendships they have made. What an amazing end to a highly valued group program. Watch for more details in our next Newsletter!

International Children's Symposium

"Children and HIV: Start Early, Start Now!" is the title of the international symposium in Melbourne, Australia in July 2014. The symposium is being held in conjunction with the International AIDS Conference, AIDS2014 and is co-hosted by The Teresa Group and the Coalition for Children Affected by AIDS.
The symposium will explore proactive, integrated approaches that focus on early childhood and HIV. By holding this symposium we hope to encourage services to be more proactive, reaching children born into HIV affected families before they show distress and disadvantage. Click here for more information about the symposium.
