AAU NEWS: Issue 74

Secretary General's Message
Dear Colleagues

I am reminded of one of the great quotes by Benjamin Franklin who said that “an investment in knowledge pays the best interest”. As African Higher Education Institutions we know that education requires costly resources such as funding, human resources, infrastructure and time – all of which are frequently hard to find. We should be inspired and encouraged by the fact that those who invest towards these resources, end up richer – not just because they often improve their economic situations, but because their intellectual minds become richer too.

The period of February to April 2019 has been busy but extremely successful for the Association. The ACE I and ACE Impact meetings hosted by the Djibouti Government were highly successful. The Association is proud that the AAU North Africa Regional Office – hosted by Al-Azhar University - was inaugurated in March. The maiden African Universities Olympic Games were also held in Egypt as a follow-up event to the AAU North Africa Regional office inauguration.

During this period, the Association has trained over 1000 staff from African Universities - covering key themes related to university leadership, management, quality teaching, the use of technology, knowledge management, data ethics and skills, research leadership, scientific writing, communication skills among several other themes.

We are currently busy organizing the 2019 Conference of Rectors, Vice Chancellors and Presidents (COREVIP) of African Universities that will be co-hosted by Al-Azhar University from 8-11 July 2019 in Cairo, Egypt. I would like to take this opportunity to invite and encourage all academics, researchers, ministers of higher education and stakeholders interested in African Higher Education to attend and have the opportunity of interacting with African Universities leaders. This is the 2019 COREVIP Website.

The AAU TV is now broadcasting via satellite - I encourage all stakeholders to find the AAU TV Channel and enjoy the programs that we develop for your benefit. This NOTE details the instructions of how to access the AAU TV Channel from your television sets.

I welcome you to read the updates and news items that we have compiled for your information and benefit.

Yours in the Service of Higher Education in Africa
Professor Etienne Ehouan Ehile
