AAU NEWS: Issue 72

Secretary General's Message

Dear Colleagues

I and my staff at the Secretariat bring you greetings and I am pleased to give you an update on our activities during the month of October 2018.

The Secretariat has been heavily involved in facilitating the desk review of 110 proposals submitted under the ACE for Development Impact (ACE Impact) Project which was approved by the World Bank. These proposals were carefully reviewed by experts in the various thematic fields of Health, Agriculture, Environment, Social Sciences and STEM. Secretariat staff also handled the logistics for the remote panel evaluations. Subsequently 65 proposals were shortlisted, and onsite visits were undertaken to the higher education institutions which submitted them. Please read more from here: https://ace.aau.org/ace-impact-in-motion/

Our AAU Television Crew has traveled to the University of Cape Coast here in Ghana to record some documentaries. The Secretariat is appealing to the Member Universities to support the AAU TV content creation by inviting and funding the TV Crew to visit their campuses. Please email aautv@aau.org if you would like to work with the AAU TV Crew to document your university's success stories.

I traveled to Harare in Zimbabwe to witness the 2018 Graduation Ceremony for Women’s University in Africa and the Inauguration of their 3rd Chancellor, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang on 26th October, 2018. We congratulate Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang who is also an ex-board member of the AAU .

The Secretariat is launching several surveys as a response to the need for us to be responsive to the requirements of our African Higher Education stakeholders. The first survey is seeking to understand the training needs of our African Higher Education Community. We have initiated several capacity building initiatives – and we are using this survey to find out if we are on the right track and what we could improve. Please take 10 minutes to respond to this survey which is found here: https://www.research.net/r/AAUTRGNEEDS

Several of our stakeholders have indicated that there are concerns about the quality of the supervision of post graduate students in African Universities. We have designed a Post-graduate Students Satisfaction Survey and we request that post-graduate students in African Universities complete it. The survey is found here: https://www.research.net/r/SatisfactionPGS

The African University Week Celebrations here in Ghana (12-16 November 2018) will be attended by a High-Level Delegation from various Universities in Sudan. The Delegation includes 12 Vice Chancellors and other very senior staff. I invite Vice Chancellors in Ghana and those in the continent to participate in the AAU-organized African University Week Celebrations and benefit from interacting with our Sudan colleagues.

Finally, I call on African Universities to recognize the African Universities Week during the period 12-16 November 2018. This can be done through organizing seminars, debates, talks, exhibitions, open days and others. Additional information on the African Universities Week Celebrations can be found from this: https://events.aau.org/auweek/
