AAU NEWS: Issue 73

Secretary General's Message
Dear Colleagues

We have reached the end of a very successful 2018 and I would like to extend my sincere gratitude for your continued support to the Association of African Universities network and secretariat. My gratitude goes to the AAU Governing Board, the AAU member universities, the staff of the Association, our development partners, our key partners and all the stakeholders of African Higher Education for standing with us – not only this year but also in the past years.
The AAU Television was launched in April 2018 and we are proud of the content that we have contributed for the benefit of African Higher Education – with 450 videos shared to-date. I invite you to follow our FaceBook and YouTube channels. The AAU TV is our tool for creating value for AAU Member Institutions. We use the TV to “shine the light on African Higher Education” by telling the stories of African Higher Education
We established the AAU East Africa Regional Office in March 2018. It is hosted by the University of Khartoum – where the initial discussions concerning the establishment of the AAU began in 1962. The Secretariat will launch the AAU North Africa Regional Office in March 2019 and it will be hosted by Al Azhar University in Egypt. Other AAU Regional Offices will be established in Southern and Central Africa. The main reason for establishing the AAU Regional Offices is to enable better engagement with our valued Member Institutions.
Based on the excellent work that has been done by the Association in implementing the Africa Higher Education Centres of Excellence Phase 1 Project (ACE1) – the World Bank approved funding for the ACE for Development Impact (ACE Impact) Project. The ACE Impact Project will see over USD300 million invested in selected Centres of Excellence. In November we announced the conditional selection of 44 Centres of Excellence in 12 participating countries in the West and Central Africa (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, and Togo) under the ACE Impact Project.
We continued with our fee-based training workshops and trained 850 staff from African Universities. These workshops are tailor-made to the needs of African Universities.
The African University Week Celebrations were successfully held in Ghana from 12-16 November 2018 and the events were attended by a High-Level Delegation from various Universities in Sudan. The delegation of 22 included 12 Vice Chancellors.

The Secretariat launched several surveys as a response to the need for us to be responsive to the requirements of our African Higher Education stakeholders. The first survey is seeking to understand the training needs of our African Higher Education Community.
The Post-graduate Students Satisfaction Survey seeks to find out how well post-graduate students are satisfied with the quality of research supervision in African Universities.

The AAU Secretariat developed its Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Framework – and this framework will help us to monitor and measure the impact of the Association.
I am pleased to share the 2017/2018 AAU Annual Report – you will find very useful updates concerning the work of the Association.

I wish you happy holidays, safe travels and a prosperous 2019!

Yours in the Service of Higher Education in Africa
