Community Futures at the BC Legislature
On March 11, 2015,  Wendy Smitka and Robert Annis from Community Futures British Columbia's Board of Directors along with Debra Arnott, Community Futures Sun Country, visited the BC Legislative Building to provide information on how Community Futures helps individuals buy, sell or grow their small businesses in rural BC.  
Rural Advisory Council Members Announced - March 11
Congratulations to Community Futures network members Deb Arnott, Community Futures Sun Country; Geri Collins, Community Futures Development Corporation of Central Interior First Nations; Tom Hoffman, Community Futures Cariboo Chilcotin; Sue Kenny, Community Futures Peace Liard, as well as all the other individuals who were appointed.  The Rural Advisory Council was formed to provide advice on rural economic development and will be meeting on a quarterly basis, the first meeting is being held March 26-27 in Victoria.  Learn More  
Community Futures BC - Committee Update - March 2015
  • BC Futures Fund  Committee  - WED has chosen the BC Futures Fund model as the model for Investment Fund Pools for all Western Provinces.   To date there are 8 approved BC Futures Fund Loans and 3 PAL loans have been converted.  Offices with PAL loans are able to convert to BC Futures Fund loans at any time.  Forms are available on the Community Futures BC website, or contact the office for more information. The BC Futures Fund documentation and processes are under routine review by the committee and will be revised accordingly.  
  • Business Analyst Support Committee - Work continues on initiatives supporting business analysts in the province. Collections training videos have been developed and will be made available along with a workbook resource.  The collections training will also take place via webinar which will also be recorded for later viewing.
  • Marketing Committee - The marketing contract with LBMG is coming to an end.  The committee is compiling a report summarizing the results of the contract and it will be made available to the members.
  • Networks and Partnerships Committee - On March 11, 2015, members of the Networks and Partnerships committee made a presentation at the Provincial Legislature to raise awareness of the Community Futures program.  MLA’s were provided with publications highlighting the program’s accomplishments as well as the accomplishments of clients. 
  • Values, Standards and Performance Committee - The Network Support pilot visit was completed in February.  Feedback from the visit will be made available to the committee to assist with the development of best practices for supporting members with their goals.
  • Salary Survey Committee - The Salary Survey has been revised and will be distributed to offices in March.  The report on the survey results is expected to be completed by the end of April 2015.
Entrepreneurs with Disabilities Program 
The pre and post loans client assistance program has been well-utilized by Community Futures offices this quarter.  With 14 funding requests for independent coaches approved, EDP clients will be receive extra assistance with marketing, business plan development and accounting through this program.
The EDP has been extended for one more fiscal year.  WED will be conducting a review of both urban and rural programs for entrepreneurs with disabilities. The EDP Committee meets in person on March 30 for strategic planning.  Key discussion points will include defining  success and examining EDP performance measures in anticipation of WED’s program review.
A marketing consultant has been hired to create an online media strategy for promoting the EDP.  The strategy will be rolled out in the new fiscal year.  For more information contact Garry Angus  604-289-4222 ext 226.
