Name: Cecilia Medilo
Age:    14
Sport:  Judo & Jiu Jitsu
Level:  National
Cecilia Medilo was introduced to the world of martial arts at a very young age.
She started with Tae Kwon Do, and while she enjoyed it, it did not inspire her beyond participating as a recreational activity.
It took a spark a few years later, when she went to watch a Jiu-jitsu competition for the first time, to ignite the passion and determination she now brings to her sport.
“It was a small local tournament and every competitor looked so brilliant” Cecilia says. “Right at that moment I knew I wanted to be better, that’s when it all started for me”.
She has come a long way since then. In 2013, Cecilia competed in the Pan Kids Jiu-jitsu Championships, one of the most prestigious Jiu-jitsu tournaments for youths. Her success at this tournament left her hungry for more, and she began practicing Judo as well.
“Soon after the Pan-Am tournament I started Judo, and in my second practice I hyper-extended someone’s arm with my favorite move, the arm bar” she says. “It wasn’t my fault, he just landed weird!” she says. “But since then I got a reputation for being great at Judo. That made me want to prove people right”.
Cecilia’s powerful internal motivation has paid off. She is now a 3 time Jiu-jitsu World Champion, and is currently training to compete at the Canadian Judo Nationals in two age groups, U16 and U18, despite being only 14 years old.
Even someone as driven as Cecilia needs people in her corner she can turn to, and she has them in spades.
“My dad would search through books and videos to help me find the best techniques” she says. “And he would research my opponents before I would fight them”.
“My mother helps heal me up when I’m sore or sick and tired, and my sister has been my training partner forever” she says. “She pushes me to practice harder, and she makes me a better fighter”.
Finally, Cecilia says her training at the Athlete Factory has helped her tremendously.
“I have learned a lot about how to take care of my body, and how to use it efficiently” Cecilia says. “It gives me the strength and confidence to execute Judo techniques and throw people to the ground”.
Cecilia has some poignant advice for other up and coming athletes: “Never give up, always believe you can do it and say it out loud. It’s a powerful tool for you and the people behind you”.
Cecilia is taking her own advice and setting her sights on some ambitious goals for the coming year. She wants to represent Canada at the Cadet World Judo Championships in Chile, but first, she must win the Canadian Judo Nationals this May.
With her past accomplishments, dedicated training, and strong belief in herself, Cecilia is leaving little doubt that she will get where she wants to go.
