Name:  Carmen Izyk

Age:  17

Sport: Rugby

Level:  National

Two and a half years ago, Carmen was introduced to Rugby in High School. Although being doubted due to her size she used this as motivation to "prove them wrong".

It wasn't soon after her first High School season that Carmen joined the Lions Rugby Club out of Okotoks where she was able to learn more about the game and techniques involved. This experience gave Carmen the passion to pursue Rugby more seriously and is the reason she started training at The Athlete Factory in March 2016.

One of Carmen's most memorable moments to date was the first time she went to Las Vegas for a tournament where she scored a try during the last play of the game and fellow Athlete Factory Athlete, Brogan Mior, successfully kicked the conversion to tie the score. In sudden death to follow, Carmen's team was able to win the ball in a scrum to gain possession and following a couple great passes, Carmen was able to score the game-winning try. "It was at that moment that I completely fell in love with the game" says Carmen.

When discussing The Athlete Factory, Carmen's words are "I'm constantly inspired to improve, and I know I wouldn't have learnt the discipline to be where I am today without this training". The biggest thing she has learned from her training is the ability to give everything you have both physically and mentally, which she is able to translate directly into her sport for every play.

When asked for advice to athletes who want to achieve a higher level, Carmen says "you have to want it and then work for it" and adds "with the majority of choices I make, I think about how it will affect my ability to achieve my goals".

Carmen is looking to have the opportunity to play Rugby at the University level and also explore the next possibilities that Rugby Canada has to offer. In addition she plans on working towards breaking her current personal bests in all of the specialized tests.
