The Factory News

March 2018

This Month's Featured Athlete

Cian Hilkewich
16, Lacrosse, Attack/Midfield
While New York City may get all the attention, Athlete Factory athlete Cian Hilkewich is making his dreams come true in Pawling, New York instead.

“I recently made the move to Trinity Pawling School to play for their lacrosse program,” Cian says.

As a tenth grader and newcomer, Cian is one of the youngest players and feels that he has a lot to learn. Luckily, this just pushes him to work extremely hard.

“I’m really looking forward to continuing my development here,” he says.

In the last few years, Cian has played high-level lacrosse on a number of teams. He has played A-Level and Team Alberta box lacrosse, as well as Team Alberta, Chilly Willy’s and Elev8 elite field lacrosse.

In spite of all his success, Cian remains extremely grounded and ambitious.

“In the next year I want to get faster and stronger, and to come back to Calgary in the summer to play field lacrosse with Calgary Field and the Chilly Willy’s,” he says.

“I just want to focus and work on my development as an athlete.”

In his time with the Athlete Factory, Cian has made huge physical strides.

“I feel like the Athlete Factory is really good at finding out what works for you personally,” he says. “The individualized feedback and attention has really helped me get stronger and become an overall better athlete.”

Even so, Cian knows the work is never done.

“My advice to aspiring high-level athletes would be not to get down on yourself when you do something wrong or make a mistake, because you definitely will. You just have to keep it in mind and move on, and use that experience to make yourself a better athlete.”

Cian’s drive and level-head will serve him well in his next goal, to make the Varsity lacrosse team at Trinity Pawling this season.

The Athlete Factory returns from Rome

Athlete Factory Director of Performance, Paul Balsom, and I had the pleasure of spending a week in early February with AS Roma Football Club, in Rome Italy at the invite of AS Roma's Darcy Norman, Director of Performance.

Our time at AS Roma was an opportunity to share and present Paul’s doctorate research and practical work, which has driven how the Athlete Factory conditions and produces athletes for elite performance. In addition, we were able to watch the Roma players train and prepare for their upcoming match, discuss with Darcy and his staff their conditioning philosophy, and work hands on with a few injured Roma players to further demonstrate our methods that have in particular led to our successful results and reputation in rehabilitation.

As with any time we spend visiting or consulting for professional teams we take a collaborative approach, and look to identify improvements that we might take back to the Athlete Factory, as well as reinforce processes we already have in place. We strongly believe it is important to never stop learning and growing, and it is always reconfirming to see the impact that our work can make at this level.

Overall it was a very exciting and rewarding trip, culminating in VIP tickets to AS Roman's match vs. Benevento in Stadio Olimpico. We would like to extend many thanks to Darcy Norman and his staff for the invitation to share our work and for hosting us.
