 ATHLETE PROFILE

Claire Standring

Age: 18
Sport: Volleyball
Level: CIS (Varsity)
Team: Saint Mary’s University Huskies
Could you give us a brief overview of your development and progression through the volleyball ranks over the last few years?

Over the past few years, I have really made a commitment to work hard and improve my skills, I changed clubs for my U18 year to be a left side for 403 Selects Volleyball Club; this team was the highest level team I played for before my journey to the next level, which is at CIS.

My U18 year was an overall success, both personally as well as for the team. We took home a gold medal from Div 1, Tier 2 at Nationals, and finished ranked one of the top 10 U18 teams in Canada for that season.

If you were to pick one moment from your career so far, one that stands out as being quite memorable, what would it be?

Memorable moments in sport and athletics are so difficult to narrow down to just one. However, if I had to pick one that was quite memorable it would be the feeling of standing on that court in our final game of U18 Nationals and watching the ball drop on the other side of the net for our game winning point.

The feeling of bittersweet joy that you finished your season successfully with a gold medal, however, knowing it would also be the last time I would ever set foot on a court to play with those girls at that level again. Time is often taken for granted, but memories do not have to be, and this experience made me appreciate the fact that memories cannot be recreated, only cherished.

You’ve been with the Athlete Factory for some time now, in what ways has it helped you accelerate your athletic abilities and how do you feel that it differs from your previous strength and conditioning?

I started training with the Athlete Factory in November 2015, and since then I have become a different athlete. The personalized, and innovative training techniques that the Athlete Factory provides allowed for me to become stronger, faster, and overall more reactive in my sport. The science behind the method of training that the coaches standby is what separates the Athlete Factory from other facilities.

I had never really had any formal level of strength and conditioning training before my experience with the Athlete Factory, and I am truthful when I say that I wouldn’t have wanted to start anywhere else. All athletes know that bad habits are some of the most difficult things to change, and having the opportunity to begin my training on a technically correct level has allowed me to form good habits that will benefit me long term.

The Athlete Factory stresses the specification and puts emphasis on form which is key in maximizing the benefits from training. I have had less injuries than any other previous season since training with the Athlete Factory, as well as making measurable gains in the gym and on the court.

My coach Robin Bauer has been the pivotal figure in my athletic career transitioning form club into CIS. He has accelerated not only my athletic ability, but also my mental strength, and since the beginning of my journey with the Athlete Factory I can honestly say that I am not only a stronger athlete, but a better person as well.

If you could give one piece of advice to aspiring high level athletes out there, what would it be?

It would be to listen; so often we think we can learn so much from just doing, and tuning out the rest. We allow so much valuable information to be dismissed because we think we know enough, or we're good enough. In reality, we are never good enough, there is always room for more, there can always be a better shot, hit, time, or pass, and my best piece of advice to an aspiring athlete is to listen, and to never settle. Your success is up to you.

What’s next for Claire? What aspirations and dreams do you have for the next 12 months?

Starting my first season as a Husky, I plan to land a starting position as a left side rookie on the SMU team, as well as being awarded rookie of the year. This team is in the rebuilding stages of their program and as a strong recruit coming in, I want to bring as much as I can to the table, and push this program to win.

By the time I graduate from this program I want to earn a banner on the wall, and have my name be remembered even after my time has passed.
Best of luck to Claire for the up and coming season.
