This Month's Featured Athlete

Alyson MacDougall
18, Rugby, National
As a multi-sport athlete, Alyson MacDougall had a tough choice to make as she made it to higher and higher levels.

“I play rugby and hockey, but I decided to play rugby at the highest level,” Alyson says.

Alyson was introduced to rugby while attending Notre Dame High School. During that time, she began to train at the Athlete Factory as part of the Rugby Alberta development program.

“It was the first time I was identified as having untapped potential to develop as a rugby player and high-level athlete,” she says.

Now a member of the University of Calgary Dino Women’s Rugby Team, where she plays as a second or back-row forward, Alyson says that the opportunity to train at the Athlete Factory was invaluable in getting her to where she is today.

“Not only did the program help me improve my rugby skills, but the strength and conditioning portions gave me a new sense of discipline,” Alyson says. “I also gained insight into how to properly train my body to prepare for a season of play.”

For Alyson, training at the Athlete Factory helped elevate her game, on and off the field. “The coaches and athletes at the Athlete Factory are a different breed of committed and hardworking people. When I bought into the culture and the atmosphere, it encouraged me to work harder in everything I do.”

Alyson also credits the relationship of trust she developed with her coaches as being beneficial to her overall development. “I worked closely with Coach Doug and Coach Juul, and it really furthered my training that I was able to trust that the work I was putting in was being doubled by them behind the scenes. They spent time building my programs and constantly checking in to make sure I was on the right track.”

Since working with Athlete Factory coaches, not only Alyson set and reached training goals like setting many personal-bests and making it onto the record-board for heaviest squat in her age group, Alyson also achieved one of the biggest goals she set the moment she started playing rugby.

“I wanted to make the U18 Team Canada 15’s Rugby team,” Alyson says. “The Athlete Factory helped me work specifically towards my goals, and I was able to put on the maple leaf jersey and represent Canada alongside 24 of the best female rugby players in the country.”

The opportunity to play for Canada will long be one of Alyson’s most cherished memories. “I think something that will stay with me forever is the Team Canada jersey presentation. It took place on parliament hill during the excitement of the Canada 150 celebration in Ottawa. Being presented with that national team jersey made me feel grateful and blessed to have the opportunity and the tools to pursue my dreams.”

The experience was made all the more special by the fact that Alyson was presented her jersey by Jen Boyed, a Team Canada rugby coach and national level athlete who she has looked up to since taking up rugby.

With all her hard work, dedication and impressive abilities, Alyson is truly on her way to being someone that up-and- coming athletes will look up to in their turn.

“If I could give one piece of advice to aspiring high-level athletes, it would be that you deserve to pursue any goals that are important to you, no matter what other people think of them,” she says.

“You need to be willing to make sacrifices. In high school, I may have gone to more parties or spent more time with friends if I didn’t want to play on the national rugby team, but I wouldn’t trade the feeling of putting on that jersey for anything.”

In the upcoming year, Alyson will be working hard with the Dinos. “I would like to bring home a medal from nationals,” she says. “We fell short this past year, but we are already preparing hard for next season.”

Alyson is also hoping for the chance to represent Canada again as a member of U20 Team
Canada.
