It takes more than surgery to change a person's life.
Melisa Aljandrina Col Laj, from Purulha Baja Verapaz, was born with a cleft lip and palate. Held in her mother's arms, she was brought to us during the Mobile Medical Mission in Purulha to be triaged.
In preparation for her surgery, Melisa will be participating in our nutritional program for two months. Our health promotor Marta de la Cruz gave her the much needed formula and taught her mother, also named Marta, the techniques to take care of Melisa using a special bottle which makes the feeding process easier.
Thanks to our Targeted Infant Nutrition Program, our volunteers and donors who help us support it, infants are able to gain weight and become strong enough to undergo surgery. It only costs $35 to feed an infant with cleft lip and palate during one month.
