Providing an exceptional home training environment for talented Mid West Athletes
Executive Officer Update

At MWAS it has been a very busy month for our Scholarship athletes and coaches who have been competing in the finals of their local sporting competitions together with trips away and training for the State teams or individual State competitions.

The majority of our athletes are travelling away for their major competitions over the next month, including Scholarship athletes Alex Ducas, Oliver Haste, Emma Burke, Emily Winterbine, Mary Burke and Gemma Dix, who are all playing for WA in the under-18 National Basketball Championships in Townsville from April 8 to 15. In addition to this, Imogen Perejuan will compete in the 90m and 200m hurdles at the Australian Schools Athletics Championships in Sydney between March 26 and April 2, together with Development Squad members Johnny Garlett (High Jump) and Matt Cowley (100m). Good luck to all athletes and I am sure you will do us all proud.

During the recent West Coast Eagles visit to Geraldton, our Scholarship coaches were invited to participate in a training session delivered by their coaching staff to the East Fremantle Mid West Football Development Squad. This was an incredible opportunity for our coaches to work with the Eagles team and they gained great insights into the world of elite sports coaching through their methodologies, athlete relationship development and management.

We are working hard on keeping our members and followers updated on news, events and relevant sporting information via social media. If you would like to stay up to date with what MWAS and our partners are doing please like us on Facebook.

Let us know if there is anything else you would like to see in our newsletter or on our Facebook Page.

Development Squad

We have completed the selection process for the MWAS Development Squad program. This squad is currently made up of 24 Mid West athletes from 9 separate sports. On Sunday, these athletes completed the first session of their program when they participated in an Introductory Sports Psychology workshop.

Mitchell and Brown Players of the Year!

Emma Bourke
Alex Ducas

Congratulations to Alex Ducas and Emma Burke on winning Geraldton Amateur Basketball Association's men's and women’s Division 1 Most Valuable Player Awards for 2016-2017 and for being selected in the All-Star 5 teams as well.

Both athletes deserved these Awards very much, and this is recognition of their hard work. To win these awards amongst the talented adults in these competitions is a fantastic achievement and in Alex’s
case it is the first time that a father and son have won the same Award. Aaron and Alex you should both be really proud!

Our Coaches

AFL COACH – Craig Walker

Craig is the current WA State Country football coach and he loves working with young athletes and helping them to develop their skills on the field. He's been coaching football since 2003. In 2009 he took up the position as the Director of the East Fremantle Mid West Football Development Squad and continues to work tirelessly with this group. His passion for coaching is obvious and he is an asset to MWAS and the Mid West Region. Great job Craig!

Sport Psychology Corner

Last weekend MWAS conducted specialist sports psychology workshops and individual sessions with our athletes as part of our ongoing programs. We also provided workshops to the Geraldton Buccaneers men’s State Basketball League team and the Mid West Tigers under-19 State League Netball Team. Both of these groups participated in High Performing Elite teams workshops and really enjoyed the experience.
We hope that this helps you to achieve your goals in 2017.
