While it is probably quite easy to buy tea at a tea shop or online, the decision to start growing and making tea is tough and asks for a lot of dedication.

In Japan new tea fields are usually started from tea cuttings - small branches cut of a mother tea plant, instead of tea seeds, because tea plants grown from tea seeds do not keep all genetic information from their mother plants. Tea cuttings are kept in a nursery for a year or two to grow some roots before they can be replanted into a future tea field. Then every year they have to be weeded and trimmed, so that they can grow healthy and build strong branch system, on which precious tea leaves will be growing in future. In total it takes about five years for a tea plant to mature until it's leaves can be harvested and made into tea.

Therefore, when a tea farmer wants to start growing tea, he has to dedicate five years to taking care of the young tea plants until they are ready to give the tea back to him. Japanese tea you like, thus, is possible because of such dedication of the tea farmers; and you enjoying it, makes our work count;]

What's New? - Exclusive High Grade Tea

During the last few months we have been bring you a few new teas. This month we would like to introduce two more new teas. While most of Japanese green teas are machine-made, on rare occasions teas are hand-made too. Instead of using a harvesting machine tea can be hand-picked and instead of using factory processing machines it can be hand-rolled too. Because a lot of human energy is necessary to make these teas, the amount is usually very small. It is a unique chance this month to try Japanese teas with more warmth of human touch: Hand-picked Sencha and Hand-rolled Sencha.

Meet Obubu's Friends - Becki Benedict

Who are you and what do you do? Hi, my name is Becki Benedict. I’m the Co-Founder of Green Tea Guide, a website providing research-based articles about the health benefits of green tea. I lived in Japan for over 10 years, so I naturally came to love everything about green tea and wanted to share my knowledge with friends and family in the U.S. Green Tea Guide is a collection of articles, facts, recipes, videos, and basic information about green tea.
How did you get to know Obubu? I first contacted Obubu last year about selling green tea. Of all the suppliers I contacted, Obubu was the most helpful. Over the past year, through emails and Skype, Simona and Matsu have become good friends. I hope to visit the Obubu team in Wazuka in the future.
What is Obubu to you? Obubu is inspiration that the youth of Japan will continue the tradition of green tea in Japan and abroad. I’m impressed with the way Obubu has reached out to the international community to educate anyone interested about green tea.
What is your favorite way to make tea? I love every variety of green tea. But if I had to choose a favorite, it would probably be Matcha. Many years ago when I went to Japan to study abroad, I practiced Japanese tea ceremony. I enjoyed the steps involved with making the perfect cup of tea.
What message would you like to pass to Obubu readers and friends? If you know and love green tea, share it with others.

Events of the Past Month - Obubu on TV

Within the last year Obubu has been brought out of the underground and has started appearing in the public eye. Our young energy and focus on bringing Japanese tea to the world has drawn a lot of Japanese media attention. In the last few months three TV channels have come to make a feature about Obubu, one of which is included in NHK program Luzon's Pot that will air at 7:45pm on the 22nd February. If you are able to watch Japanese TV, don't miss it
