ABX 2018-19 YEAR IN REVIEW
ArtsBusXpress approved $43,277 in bus grants this past year, a 28.5% increase over 2017-18. More than 7,700 San Diego County K-12 students took 167 buses on a “ride to the Arts and Sciences” in the 2018-19 school year thanks to our wonderful donors who support the ABX mission to ensure young people see live theatre and music, museums, animals and art. ArtsBusXpress Goes to the
San Diego Festival of the Arts!
This year’s ArtsBusXpress booth at the San Diego Festival of Arts was fun and action-packed - from countless parents snapping cell phone photos of their children in our new yellow ABX stand-up bus to kids receiving yellow balloons. Saturday was particularly lively with wonderful help from three young high school student volunteers from the Preuss School. The playful interaction with photos and balloons gave us a terrific chance to share the great work that ABX does in funding bus transportation to the arts and sciences for K-12 school kids. Patty Smith, our co-founder, introduced a well-known graffiti artist, David Persue, who was the featured guest artist at the festival.
Welcome Back Teachers!
Take a Field Trip this Fall
Welcome Back Teachers!
Yes, it’s that time again to hang new paper, organize the class seating charts, put a pencil on every desk, and welcome your new students. As you develop your 2019-20 class curriculum, consider adding an educational field trip to the arts or sciences at venues across San Diego county. For teachers who need funding to pay for bus transportation, visit the ABX website to apply for a “bus grant” to cover the costs (in full or in part) for buses and drivers. After all, no Child Should Miss the Bus to enjoy a life-changing experience. (Funding is limited so hurry and apply today!)
During the last school year, ABX funded transportation to over 55 different locations. If you are looking for places to take your class on a field study trip in the coming school year, check out these venues.
Recent Field Study Trips We Funded
Cabrillo Elementary School Goes to Court!
Here is what one teacher had to say about the field trip to the courthouse:
The judge and attorneys spoke throughout the trial to inform the students. The students and parents said that this was their favorite field trip ever! They got to see how the court system works first hand. We even spoke with an ATF agent and a bomb-sniffing dog. After the trial, in which Goldilocks was convicted and ordered to do community service, we ate lunch in the judge's chambers before heading back to school.
Longfellow Spanish Immersion Program Visits the Maritime Museum
Teacher Kimberly de Berzunza told us:
My 7th grade students toured the Maritime Museum as part of our study of Exploration. We toured the Berkeley, the Star of India, the USS Dolphin, and the USS Surprise. Some students toured the San Salvador and the other submarine. My students loved it and learned a lot. It was rainy, and the Museum guides allowed us to eat on the Berkeley rather than in the park as we'd planned. Our bus was punctual and drivers were friendly both ways.

ArtsBusXpress is grateful for all of our donors who help us provide much-needed funding for teachers to be able to take their students to the many arts and science venues across the County.
Demand for funding was up again this year as over 8,000 students have already benefitted from ArtsBusXpress support this year.
