News from EFG & its members

EFG Board Elections and a new full member
The 2018 Spring Council Meeting was celebrated in Çesme (Turkey) on 19 and 20 of May 2018. During the morning of the second day, the application of the Romanian National Association of Professionals in Geology and Mining was approved by EFG’s National Associations’ delegates. The Romanian colleagues presented their association and their excitement of becoming part of the European family of geologists.
Later, elections for two positions of the EFG Board were celebrated. There were two candidates for the Secretary General position: Gabriele Ponzoni (CNG) was reelected Secretary General. For the Vice President position, Michael Neumann from the German Association (BDG) was the only candidate and his candidacy was unanimously approved by the EFG delegates.

EFG Annual report 2017
EFG is pleased to present its Annual Report for the past year. 2017 was indeed the last year of EFG’s Strategic Plan for the period 2014 to 2017 and the annual report presents the main outcomes for each of the strategy’s seven action plans: supporting EFG Members, European Network, Global Network, EurGeol as Competent Person, Services, Projects and Communication.
In 2017, among others:

  • EFG succeeded in expanding its membership basis by welcoming a new full member, the EurAsian Union of Experts in Subsoil in Subsurface Management (EUES) based in Russia.
  • EFG also extended its Panels of Experts platform creating a new Panel on Geotechnics. EFG now counts with 10 panels focusing on the topics CO2 Geological Storage, Education, Geoheritage, Geothermal, Geotechnics, Hydrogeology, Minerals, Natural Hazards, Oil and Gas and Soil Protection, with a total of 222 experts from 22 European countries.
  • Moreover, EFG enlarged its international network with other organisations. In this context, collaboration agreements have been signed with the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE), the Geological Society of Korea (GSK), the United Nations Framework Classification for Resources (UNFC) and the Young Earth Scientists (YES) network.
  • The European Geologist professional title continued to gain popularity. Since its creation, nearly 1478 titles have been awarded in total and 987 titleholders are currently in good standing with EFG.
  • EFG is currently involved in 10 projects funded under the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme, some of which also count on the active participation of EFG’s national associations which are involved as Linked Third Parties (LTPs).

EFG officially recognises CPD training within the AGI/AIPG Geoscience Online Learning Initiative GOLI
EFG and the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) have recently signed an agreement advancing the international recognition of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programmes.
EFG now officially recognises, within its own CPD system, the points (CEUs) awarded via the AGI/AIPG Geoscience Online Learning Initiative GOLI. GOLI offers indeed a variety of courses that are pertinent for people outside the United States and can provide you with an additional opportunity to fulfil your annual CPD requirements.
In exchange for this now officialised recognition by EFG, the course providers offer the same registration conditions to European Geologist title holders as to Competent Persons registered with the AIPG.
The next GOLI webinar “Geoscience Ethics Case Histories: Conflicts of Interest #1” will take place on 31 May 2018 at 1:00 PM EDT. Participants will earn 0.1 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for attending this 1-hour event. The webinar will feature a panel of experts who will discuss the ethics behind conflicts of interest in the geosciences.

EAGE/EFG photo contest 2018: vote now for your favourite photo!
More than 160 entries have been submitted for this year’s edition of the EAGE/EFG photo contest ‘Geoscientists at work’. Following an internal quality check, the public vote is now open. Have a look at the photo and cast your vote online via
The 12 best photos will be showcased at the 80th EAGE Conference & Exhibition 2018, which will be held from 11 June – 14 June 2018 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Afterwards the top 12 will be exhibited at further EAGE and EFG events and will be published in a calendar.

EFG projects | CHPM2030 participation in EUSEW2018 and Geothermal conference

The CHPM2030 project will be present at the policy conference of this year’s edition of the EU Sustainable Energy Week. To learn more about the project, attend the afternoon session on 7 June (16:00-17:30), “Decarbonisation of the heating and cooling sector: coupling efficiency and renewables with security of heat supply”, where representatives of the CHPM2030 project consortium will present the project and be available to answer your questions. Register now for the EUSEW policy conference via the following link.
The project will also be presented at the “Geothermal conference: the impact of EU R&D funding” on 13 June 2018 in Brussels. This conference will provide insights into the impacts of R&D funded through the EU Framework Programmes for Research and Innovation, including providing access to the Geothermal Renewable Energy R&D Impact Report and an opportunity to influence the recommendations to increase future R&D impacts. During the workshop key industry experts will share their insights on the future of geothermal technologies.

EFG projects | UNEXMIN inventory on flooded mines

The UNEXMIN project is proud to present its European database on flooded mines. Developed by EFG in collaboration with the Geological Survey of Belgium, the Inventory of Flooded mines in Europe was developed with the objective to create an online, public access inventory, that contains sites of interest for the UNEXMIN project. The database represents a unique compilation of data on flooded mines in Europe, with a total of 8174 mines identified in 24 European countries. The database can be accessed by anyone and will be continuously updated. Read more

Interview with Pavlos Tyrologou, Coordinator of the EFG Panel of Experts on Natural Hazards and Climate Change

EFG’s Panels of Experts (PE) have been set up to provide high quality advice and information to the European institutions, to international NGO’s and to other global professional associations. EFG has currently 10 Panels of Experts active in the fields of CCS, Education, Geological Heritage, Geotechnics, Geothermal Energy, Hydrogeology, Natural Hazards, Minerals, Oil & Gas and Soil Protection. The Panels involve more than 200 voluntary experts from over 20 different countries and all aim at emphasising the importance of geology to society, the benefits of incorporating geological advice and to promote the importance of the geoscientific profession.
To raise awareness about the existence of these Panels of Experts, EFG is presenting its coordinators in a new interview series.
In May 2018, we have talked to Pavlos Tyrologou, the coordinator of the Panel on Natural Hazards and Climate Change. Read more
One Day in Europe 2018: Italy

Each month we travel to one of EFG’s national membership associations and discover their main activities and challenges. In May 2018 we have visited Italy and talked to representives of our Italian National Assocation CNG.

The Italian National Council of Geologists (CNG) is the national organization in Italy which has the legislated authority to register professional geoscientists and regulate geosciences practice in Italy. It is the largest national association within EFG representing more than 11000 individual members from the academic and professional sectors.

Representatives of CNG have informed us about challenges relating to natural hazards and equal opportunities for man and women. Here you can read a contribution by Adriana Cavaglià who speaks about the role of professional geologists in managing the earthquakes that have occurred in Central Italy between 2016 and 2018. Read more
