News from EFG & its members

EuroWorkshop "Geothermal - the Energy of the Future", Santorini, Greece, 18-19 May 2017
Shaping and strengthening a European community of better-trained geologists who exchange and collaborate together beyond national boundaries is one of the EFG’s major missions. In order to achieve that mission, the EFG has launched a new form of professional training : the EuroWorkshops. The first EuroWorkshop will take place in Fira, on the island of Santorini (Greece), on 18 and 19 May 2017. Co-organised by the EFG and the Association of Greek Geologists (AGG), the EuroWorkshop "Geothermal - The Energy of the Future" will provide a glimpse to the future of geothermal energy, facilitate cross-fertilisation between different scientific areas and contribute to bringing society a step closer to reaching the goal of zero CO2 emissions.
In addition, EFG and AGG offer special support for fifteen young professionals. If you have less than 30 years and are a student or young professional in geosciences, you may apply for a grant of 100 EUR supporting your travel and accommodation costs.

The 74th EFG Summer Council meeting will be held subsequently on 20 and 21 May (for EFG delegates only).

EFG/UNECE conference: presentations now available
EFG and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) co-organised, from 9 to 10 February 2017, the conference “International cooperation on natural resources: geoscientists’ contribution to enhanced governance, policy making and attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals”. The presentations given during the conference are now available at, in the tab “Presentations”.
More information about this event is also available in the press release.
EFG signs Agreement of Association with EAGE

EFG and the EAGE (European Association of Geoscientists Engineers) have officially signed an Agreement of Association. EFG thus becomes an Associated Society of EAGE, a status that will strengthen the close relationship between EFG and EAGE and facilitate further collaborative communication, including mutual promotion of events and publications. The Agreement of Association consolidates the collaboration with EAGE established through a first Memorandum of Understanding in 2013.
The signature took place in Brussels during the EFG/UNECE conference on 10 February 2017 and the Agreement was signed by EFG Excecutive Director Isabel Fernandez, EFG President Vitor Correia and EAGE Executive Director Marcel van Loon.

EFG projects | UNEXMIN Technology Appraisal Workshop

From the 31st of January to the 2nd of February, the UNEXMIN partners got together for an important three-day meeting entitled “Technology Appraisal Workshop”. The main objectives of this meeting were to review the work done in all areas of the project including technology developments, instrumentation, dissemination, and more, to appraise the numerous technological developments, and to conduct discussions in technical workshops and two internal meetings (Steering Committee and Advisory Board) with the goal of deciding the way forward for the coming year during which we will shortly begin the construction of the first ‘UX-1’ robotic prototype. The Advisory Board, which includes professionals from robotics and raw materials, was present and gave their valuable input and expertise to the workshop. This convention also marked an important occasion for the project for two reasons: it took place as UNEXMIN completed one full year since its formal beginning in February 2016, and also Milestone 2, ‘UX-1 technical specifications delivered’, was successfully achieved.

The ‘My Earth science educator story’ project has been instigated to encourage experienced Earth science educators to write up their stories specifically to inform and inspire the next generation. In this context, anybody who feels that he/she has contributed something to Earth science education is regarded as an ‘Earth science educator’. The stories are published at regular intervals on the International Geoscience Education Organisation (IGEO) website.
