EFG at RFG2018

Geoscience professionals from all over the world have gathered in Vancouver, Canada, from 16 to 21 June 2018, for the first international conference dedicated to the availability and delivery of resources which will allow to sustain future generations. Resources for Future Generations (RFG2018) aimed at examining three critical resources – energy, minerals and water – in the context of the earth, environment, society, and the needs and roles of future generations.
EFG was actively involved in several sessions organised all over the week and EFG representatives could foster the Federation’s broad international network thanks to official meetings with colleagues from Geoscientists Canada, AGI, TG-PPG, UNESCO, PERC, YES and UNFC working group leaders, as well as several additional unofficial discussions with EIT on Raw Materials or OneGeology. Read more

Geoscience for Society Challenge
The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) is glad to propose to the participants of the first season of EFG’s mentoring programme an opportunity for a face-to-face meeting. To benefit from this opportunity, mentees shall submit a joint application together with their mentor.
The winner of this Challenge will receive an invitation to attend a dinner debate in Brussels on the evening of 26 September 2018. The travel expenses and accommodation of the winning mentoring couple will be covered by EFG. The dinner debate will be co-hosted by EFG and the EGU (European Geosciences Union) and will focus on geoscience related aspects within the upcoming Horizon Europe research funding programme. The dinner debate will be attended by members of the EU Commission and of the EU Parliament, the EFG and the EGU Board, as well as selected leaders within geoscience-related industries.
This initiative will allow one of this year’s mentoring couples to meet face-to-face and to foster their cooperation. It will also offer the opportunity for both mentee and mentor to network with other participants, gain a better understanding of the European policy setting and learn about how geoscientists can help support Europe’s policy and needs.

EFG projects | CHPM2030 participation in EUSEW2018 and Delphi survey

The European Union’s Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) is the most important policy event dedicated to EU sustainable energy policy. Sessions are organised by the European Commission and energy stakeholders to debate policy developments and best practices on sustainable energy. The CHPM2030 project was part of the EUSEW 2018 policy conference, on 7 June 2018, and took part in the session on “Decarbonisation of the heating and cooling sector: coupling efficiency and renewable with security of heat supply”. Read more
The project is currently also conducting a two-round Delphi survey that maps future development of uncertain but important areas for CHPM technology application. During the 1st round of this Delphi survey conducted in May 2018, more than 100 experts have participated worldwide. The project now is conducting the second round and is again calling for experts in the field of geothermal and/or minerals. The new form already includes the overall opinion of the sector and encourages participants to comment in the light of previously provided expert opinions and insights. The survey also aims to analyse emerging issues of different aspects of the CHPM technology, many of which have been identified in the first round. To learn more about these identified emerging issues, and reflect on them, please email Tamas Miklovicz ( to participate. The deadline for participation is 6 July 2018. Read more

EFG projects | UNEXMIN Kaatiala field trials

UNEXMIN aims at developping an autonomous underwater explorer for flooded mines. The first field trials have started in June in Kaatiala, Finland. On the first day, the UNEXMIN team transported the UX-1 robot – weighting around 100Kg! – and all the necessary equipment to the Kaatiala test site. A base was set up at the shallow part of the lake where the tests are being held to allocate the UNEXMIN team and create its working station.  Read more

Interview with Markku Iljina, Coordinator of the EFG Panel of Experts on Mineral Resources

EFG’s Panels of Experts (PE) have been set up to provide high quality advice and information to the European institutions, to international NGO’s and to other global professional associations. EFG has currently 10 Panels of Experts active in the fields of CCS, Education, Geological Heritage, Geotechnics, Geothermal Energy, Hydrogeology, Natural Hazards, Minerals, Oil & Gas and Soil Protection. The Panels involve more than 200 voluntary experts from over 20 different countries and all aim at emphasising the importance of geology to society, the benefits of incorporating geological advice and to promote the importance of the geoscientific profession.
To raise awareness about the existence of these Panels of Experts, EFG is presenting its coordinators in a new interview series.
In June, we have talked to Markku Iljina, the coordinator of the Panel on Mineral Resources. Read more
One Day in Europe 2018: Italy

Each month we travel to one of EFG’s national membership associations and discover their main activities and challenges. In June we have continued our journey to Italy and talked to Francesco Peduto, the President of the Italian National Assocation CNG.
Francesco Peduto is an expert geologist in soil protection and civil protection. He addressed these issues both at a professional level, also with responsibility roles during the hydrogeological emergency in Campania (Southern Italy region) in 1998 (Sarno’s disaster), and at a scientific level, producing publications, geological maps and informative articles. He has been President of the Italian National Association (CNG) since December 2015 and he is a member of the “Control Room” of ITALIASICURA, the Mission Structure of the Italian Government against hydrogeological instability and he is a member of the National Observatory for Post-Earthquake Reconstruction Central Italy 2016 (also set up by the Italian Government). Read more

Members of the EFG Panel of Experts on Oil and Gas have joined forces to propose the following two training courses where EuroGeologists benefit from significant reductions:
Reservoir Quality Study of Siliciclastic Rocks
23-24 July 2018, Oybin, Germany
This short course is aimed at giving participants a detailed introduction to the study of siliciclastic reservoirs utilizing oil industry work methodologies. The course is structured in oral and practical sessions, with PPt presentations, didactic material/exercises on petrography & reservoir quality of siliciclastic rock-types through polarizing microscopy & stereo-microscopy. Examples of SEM and CL analyses are also shown to integrate the different methodologies utilized for diagenetic/reservoir quality correlation studies. Examples from siliciclastic oil reservoirs under exploration are also illustrated. Read more
