Welcome to GeoNews May...
...This month has been very busy at EFG with the organisation of the EuroWorkshop “Geology and the energy transition” and the 77th EFG Council meeting in Delft, the Netherlands. Complimentary with the EuroWorkshop we have also recently released a new issue of the European Geologist Journal which features several interesting contributions on the link between geology and the energy transition. Last but not least, we also invite you to have a read through the Federation’s 2018 Annual Report and the results of the 2018 Geoscientists Employment Survey.
Are you in a hurry? Then scroll directly to News from EFG & its members; Miscellaneous; Panels of Experts and Jobs.
EFG News | 77th EFG Council meeting
The delegates of EFG’s national association members gathered in Delft, the Netherlands, on 25 and 26 May 2019 for the 77th EFG summer Council meeting. The aim of the meeting was to review the overall progress on the implementation of the EFG Strategic Plan 2018-2022 “Towards a sustainable future”. The gathering also allowed to exchange best practices from the different national associations, notably in terms of education and outreach initiatives.
EFG News | New Board members
The Council meeting also saw the end of the term of President Vitor Correia (Portugal) who was thanked by Council for his dedicated work for EFG throughout the past six years. He has been replaced by former External Relations Officer Marko Komac (Slovenia) who was already appointed as the President-elect during the November 2018 Council meeting. Consequently, a new External Relations Officer had to be appointed and the only candidate, Pavlos Tyrologou (Greece), was elected unanimously.
EFG News | Two full members join the EFG family
During the Council meeting, two associations presented their application to become members of the EFG: the Austrian Mining Association (Bergmännischer Verband Österreichs, BVÖ) and the Geological Society of Estonia (EGEOS). Both organisations were accepted unanimously as new full members. Welcome to the EFG family!
EFG News | EFG Executive Director
During the Council meeting, the current Executive Director Isabel Fernández Fuentes has informed the delegates about her wish to resign from her position at the end of September 2019. The Council members have unanimously expressed their gratitude towards Isabel for her enthusiasm and dedicated work throughout the last 17 years.
The call for the EFG Executive Director position is now open and the deadline for applications is 21 June 2019.

EFG Projects | UNEXMIN final conference and field trials at Ecton mines
The Horizon 2020 funded UNEXMIN project will hold its final conference on 26th September 2019 in Brussels, ahead of the project’s closing. Project results, including the presence of one of the UX-1 robots, will be shown, discussed and demonstrated. The programme will include high-level discussions on raw materials policies, support from the UNEXMIN project to those policies and the European industrial innovation, and on the capabilities and future application of the exploration system. Several speakers already have confirmed their attendance and the registration for the event is now open. | Read more
The UNEXMIN team is currently in the UK, at the Ecton mines, to once again test its innovative exploration technology in real life conditions, after the field test at Kaatiala, Idrija and Urgeiriça mines. The final aim of this trial is to map the most important flooded sections of the underground mine, at the same time as the team improves the operability of the surveying process. You can read a summary of the first week on the field with the UX-1 robot here.
