$20M Energy Rebate for Tas Businesses

Last week Goanna led a delegation of Tasmania's Peak Industry Bodies, including the TSBC, ACST, TCCI and the AHA, to meet with the Energy Minister. Following this meeting Minister Groom announced a further $20M intervention of up to $15/MWh to mitigate the impact of the wholesale price increases on Tasmanian businesses. See media release at:

Goanna continues to work directly with local Retailers this week on the Rebate delivery details, which are expected to be communicated to impacted businesses shortly.

Tasmanian Wholesale "Energy Only" pricing for next Calendar Year (2018) had hit $109/MWh in late April, which was more than double the $50/MWh the same parcel of energy was trading for in March 2016. The graph below shows the half year impact of the May 2017 intervention, with Vic still trading $8/MWh higher at $106/MWh.

Wholesale pricing flows into your energy contract, but only makes up around half the cost of your businesses energy bill, whilst TasNetworks Regulated Transport tariffs make up the other half. Network tariffs for "Large" sites, which consume over 150MWh per annum (around $40,000 pa), are totally independent of your choice of Retailer and Energy Contract. Network tariff nominations are a customers responsibility and you can nominate your preferred choice every 12 months, more often if you have made significant operational changes.

From the 1st of July 2017 TasNetworks rates reduced on average by around 21% and an increased range of Network tariff choices is now available to most business users. Goanna clients who subscribe to our Business Intelligence Platform have automatically been notified of savings of over $185,000 per annum from new network tariff options, similar to that shown in the example below.
